2012 bottle I randomly found in DC. 12oz bottle pours a hazy, garnet amber with some creamy, lacing, beige head. At first waft, the nose has a TON of banana bread, some vanilla, port, caramel, slightly woody, a little pine, some tamarind. Flavor hits you with some sweetness, pine sap and then a top of sherry/port, some cherry syrup, a little peaty, some tobacco leaf, some caramelized parsnip. Full, sticky, syrupy finish. I’ve got the rest of the 4pack, I’ll probably age it a year or two.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark reddish caramel color with a medium sized foamy-soapy beige head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was malty sweet toffee with touches of wood and smoke. The flavor was malty, toasty and sweetish with moderate caramel and touches of smoke and honey. Medium length finish of toasty malts and caramel. Medium body. Solid.

Location: 12 oz bottle from State Line, 8/7/12

Aroma: It has caramel, toffee, roasted malts, peat, alcohol, some spice (maybe nutmeg?), and fruity notes
Appearance: It pours a clear dark orange-mahogany color with a small beige head and good lacing
Flavor: It tastes mid-plus sweet, heavy malty, with some balance spice, alcohol flavors, and some dark fruit
Palate: The body is fairly full, with a slightly sticky texture, a smooth feel, light heat, and a lingering finish
Overall Impression: I was fairly impressed by this one, as I have been with quite a few of the beers from the Leviathan series. This is a near top of style example of a scotch ale for me. Thanks for ending a pretty long mediocre run of scotch ales for me Harpoon, this one reminds me of what this style can be. (This is the best one I've rated since Sheep Eater back in Feb of 2011.)

Pours deep, clear mahogany into a thistle. Vanilla head with medium retention recedes to nothing leaving spot lacing. Caramel aromas. Sweet vanilla and toffee upfront turning to hot maple syrup in the lasting burn finish.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Short Pump, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized fizzy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee malts, anise, floral notes and a weird potato chip thing. The taste is big toffee notes, stone fruits, earth and an earthy hop finish. Full bodied, slight heat, slightly disjointed.

12 ounce bottle. Deep garnet color with a small beige head. Mildly smoky roasted malt nose hints at rubbing alcohol. Sweet sticky dried fruit malt flavor has some smokiness. Very noticeable warming alcohol flavor. Some hops, but malt dominates. Intense bittersweet mouthfeel and finish. Not a favorite.
