In this northern German style retro altbier, we’ve dialled down the dry-hops to zero, but cranked up the malt to create massive aromas. Toasty, toffee and floral notes duke it out for supremacy in the headspace of your glass.

When this alt hits your palate, the steely bitterness combines with the rich dry malt and the subtle alcohol warmth in a full throttle attack on your taste buds.

Malts: Carafa, Extra Pale, Munich
Hops: Hersbrucker, Magnum

On tap at BrewDog, Camden on 11th February 2015. Deep, clear amber with off-white ring-and-film giving scant lacing. Rich malt and cheesiness - blue cheese - aromas. Very "German" flavour profile in-mouth: rich malts, tangy hops and plenty of bitter herbs with a slight salt touch. Herby and bitter finish of impressive duration for a keg ale. Fair body for strength with a zingy mouthfeel.

From keg, one-third pint at BrewDog Liverpool. Deep dark amber coloured body Spotty lacing from a filmy-type layer. Dark malty aroma, mid-sweet and mid-dry. Well blended taste profile of dark malts, including nuts, bread and caramel, joined by mild dark spices. Bittersweet tail. Fine bodied. Likable (02.02.2015).

Bottle: Clear, deep amber coloured, mid-sized stable and creamy off-white head; moderate fruity-toasty nose, Uerige-like hop-profile well detectable; moderate dryish bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied and pretty soft; dark malty and - surprisingly - chocolatey traces in the hoppy-fruity finish. Pretty good and pretty close to a good Düsseldorf original…
