In this northern German style retro altbier, we’ve dialled down the dry-hops to zero, but cranked up the malt to create massive aromas. Toasty, toffee and floral notes duke it out for supremacy in the headspace of your glass.
When this alt hits your palate, the steely bitterness combines with the rich dry malt and the subtle alcohol warmth in a full throttle attack on your taste buds.
Malts: Carafa, Extra Pale, Munich
Hops: Hersbrucker, Magnum

Bottled. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is strong on the malty side with also some fruits and mild berries to it. Flavour is nutty, some caramelly and bready notes as well as some slight spices/berryish tones to it. Strange brew.

On tap at BD Shepherds Bush. Clear red amber colour lasting dark beige head. Light east drinking alt. Some altbier character. Bit too hoppy for a true alt in dusseldorf. But very drinkable. Tasty. Bit too forward for the knock back style.

330ml bottle [as Prototype - Alt Amber]. Clear, copper-ish mahogany colour with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Roasted grainy, bready aroma, a touch of "Mettwurst". Taste is toasty grainy, a touch of caramel, nice salty and minimally smoky "Mettwurst"-effect in combination with the intrinsically bitter hops. Lovely.

Draught @ BrewDog Helsinki. Aroma is rather malty with lots of nuts. Also some ripe fruits and berries. Flavour has nuts, sweet malty tones and some toffee. Finishes with somewhat unpleasant mint-like lingering hops. Not exactly my thing.

Bright clear deep amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is light and smooth and semi dry, fine carbonation. Malts are smooth and dry with mild cream and a little toffee. Nice touch of that German nuttyness as well. Tangy dried fruits lead to mildly spicy marmalade. Trace of bubblegum ester. Light dry finish with a strong bitter linger. Mmmm - interesting take on the German style. Not sure this will become a permanent fixture but quite a sophisticated effort from Brewdog.

Bottle at home from Bottledog KingsX split with Sarah. Aroma is toasted grains, little toast and marmelade, grainy, little sweet raisin. Amber / copper coloured pour with a lasting loose off white head. Just a whiff od smoke on the nose as well. Flavour is composed of dark toasted grains, berry raisin fruits and a little orange marmelade, semi sweet grains, little earthy notes from the hops and a touch of veg. Palate is medium bodied, semi-sweet and modeate airy carbonation. Lingering dirty toasted grains and earthy hop.

Bottle from BrewDog online. It pours clear deep red-brown with a medium beige head. The nose is rich, earthy, dried fruits, fruit cake, dirt, burnt caramel and All Bran. The taste is bitter-sweet, rich, woody, old leather armchair, dirt, varnish, raisin, sultana, earthy, resin, All Bran with a very dry finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Quite nice for an Alt. Rich and earthy.
