Arbor Brewing Company is proud to offer this exclusive, limited-edition, hand-packaged and bottle-conditioned ale in the Belgian Aged Pale tradition. Our interpretation of this rare Belgian stye was created by aging our Larry Hoppe Double IPA for six months in gueuze-innoculated oak casks and then bottle conditioning for a minimum of two months. The result is a unique ale with a bright golden hue, moderate carbonation, and a burst of complex fruity, spicy, sweet-tart, and earthy flavors, with a quenching acidity in the finish. As with most bottle-conditioned ales, there may be a thin layer of sediment on the bottom of the bottle. For best results, uncork slowly and decant gently into a glass without disturbing the sediment.

Hazy brown coloured body with a thin off-white large bubbled head. Aroma of sour grapes, apples, pears and a very subdued oaky and dry note. Medium-bodied; Assertive funky flavour at first with apples, pears, yeast, grain, alcohol and sour grapes all around, showing some light alcohol and a fresh fruit note. Aftertaste shows a lot of sour funky notes with dry flavours, a bit of hay and grass, a lot of yeast and alcohol flavours and some smooth sweetness that shows a lot of fruity characteristics. Overall, a nice funky beer with a lot of flavour and much less of any hops or an IPA-style than you could imagine, but definitely worth sampling if you like wild beers. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 24-July-2015 for US$15,99 sampled at home in Washington on Christmas Day on 25-December-2016.

Draught @ Ashley’s, Ann Arbor, MI
Pours hazy deep golden/amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, citrus, tartness and some dried fruits. Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter and light sour with a long fruity, tart and bitter finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle, 75cl, at Jolly Pumpkin, Ann Arbor. An unclear dark amber colored beer topped by a small light beige head. The aroma has a touch of vinegar, some oak and berries. Some caramel in the flavor, with oak, vinegar, tannins and berries. Tart, full bodied and nicely carbonated. Lasting finish. A bit too straight forward this one, but nice. Interesting with the bitterness showing up at the very end only. 150615

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2014 vintage bottling. Pours lightly hazy deep orange amber color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart cherry, green apple, lemon peel, tangerine, pineapple, red wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, light pine, leather, musty funk, light pepper, light vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, hops, and oak barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of tart cherry, green apple, lemon peel, tangerine, pineapple, red wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, light pine, leather, toast, musty funk, light pepper, light vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Good amount of fruity/oaky tartness and slight bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart cherry, green apple, lemon peel, tangerine, pineapple, red wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, light pine, leather, toast, musty funk, light pepper, light vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, oak barrel, and hop flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately acidic, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Sour DIPA. All around good complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, oak, and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV with the balanced acidity. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Variegated golden brown color, thick tan head with good retention, solid lacing. Aroma of dusty brown bread and light citrus, with a touch of spice. Taste is an odd but interesting combination of bitter and sour that pretty much works, with a peppery finish that just a bit too bitter. Overall, a nice try that is certainly unique.

On tap at MBGSF 2010. Smells of sour caramel. Looks like a cloudy, brown, piece of shit. Taste is much better. Sweet-and-sour with apricot and peach, lemon. It’s ok, but nothing special. Doesn’t really work.

Sampled at the MiBGSF ’10. Poured a hazy orange gold with a tan head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had some pine which did not combine nicely with the sour notes at all. Flavor was similar with backing pine hops but mainly sour and tart fruits stick out. Didn’t find the hoppy sour a particularly attractive.
