Legend has it that long ago, before the Aztecs, the god Quetz chose the Tadarida bat to care for and proliferate the fruit of Opuntia—the tuna, or prickly pear. Since then Fortuna Roja—the red-crested vanguard—has warded the little fruit from feasting predator insects and carried its pollen across countries and continents as the cacti have travelled from their source in ancient Tenochtitlan. This stunningly bright-hued beer is our homage to the efforts of the Fortuna Roja, its intense tartness curbed only by the fullness imparted by the tunas during its long torpor in oaken barrels. ¡VIVA FORTUNA ROJA! Ingredients: Pilsen & acidulated malts, raw wheat, flaked rye; Texas prickly pears; Perle hops; top-fermenting yeast; wild yeast & bacteria; natural, limestone-filtered, Edwards Aquifer H2O; love

On tap at brewpub. Pours a cloudy ruby with medium frothy pink head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is sour fruit and vinegar. Thin mouthfeel with a sour fruit and oak with tart finish. A very impressive sour ale from Freetail.

Bottle at the 4/13 tasting. Pours an amazing color, pinkish hues with a small white head. A rich nose that really reminded me of a jolly rancher, probably watermelon. The flavor was so unique I don’t know much about cacti: sweet watermelon-like flavors, very juicy, loads of sweetness some oak. Damn nice.

GABF 2012. Multiples pours over the first two days. Pours a clear pink appearance with a pink head. Juicy watermelon jolly rancher aroma and flavor. Fairly tart, but this impeccably tasted like a fucking jolly rancher. Kind of cool.

22oz bottle pours a hazy, grapefruit pink color with one ring of white head. Nose is weird, rhubarb jam, bread and butter pickles, dill, watermelon. Flavor is the same, dill pickles, vegetables, cucumbers, carrot, vinegar. It’s like drinking pickled rhubarb. Acidic finish.

Bottle courtesy of nimbleprop, thank you sir! Pours cloudy pink, scant off white head. Aroma of maraschino cherries, raspberries, dusty lemons, cotton candy. Taste has a sweet cherry candy start, then tart cherries, raspberries, hint of vanilla. Very tasty.
