Like FDR’s Depression-Era Radio Addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Celebrating the right to be original.

Can shared at the Night of Garbage. Procured somewhere in the Land of the Free. Pours deep amber with a lasting, creamy khaki head. Nice aroma, some nutmeg and cinnamon, light cake and toasted bread. Medium sweet flavor with dry bread, mild toasted leaves, understated spices, dry toffee and fruitcake. Medium bodied with fine carbonation and velvety mouthfeel. Moderate sweetness to finish, fruitcake, dried berries, mellow leafy bitterness, nutmeg. Nice beer.

$1.85 can, Wine Warehouse, CHO. Pours a clear brown with an inch of tan head. Smells of vanilla, caramel, and spices. Taste is sweet caramel, chocolates, and spice. Finishes with alcohol.

3rd Feb 2013: Rogue Pub on Union St, San Fransisco. The chalkboard had been written in haste and my eyes are bad, so when I asked for the ZIA beer they looked at me a bit strange. ZIA looked a lot like 21A to me: anyway we got there in the end and I’m glad we did. Dark brown body with a tan coloured head on my on-tap pint. Christmas pudding of a beer: plums, damsons and rich spices filled the nose and mouth: I really enjoyed it. Full of flavour, warming and wintery in nature: a smoking jacket sort of beer. Impressed.

On tap at Archer Ale House, pours a dark copper brown with a small beige head. Aroma of perfume, vanilla, and winter spices. Flavour is similar, bringing out notes of vanilla, nutmeg and other spices, along with some perfumey notes. Too perfumey for me, but nothing overly offensive about this. Decent.

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recede to hug rim. Sour pit fruit, nutmeg and ginger aromas. Stale bready fruitcake upfront turning dry and sour in the lasting chocolate finish.

Location: Draft @ Growlers Pour House, 12/9/12
Aroma: The nose is full of spice, with some English yeast, and some bread
Appearance: It has a dark brown pour with a light brown head and some rather heavy lace
Flavor: It is completely dominated by the spice, with underlying light sweetness and bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, a hint sticky, with lively carbonation, and a somewhat dry finish
Overall Impression: Overall, this is a decent winter beer, but it lacks balance. The spice just takes over and really overpowers everything else.
