Like FDR’s Depression-Era Radio Addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Celebrating the right to be original.

From the can one very good looking dark beer. I swear I smell a hint of rootbeer in there, no way. Head goes rocky. Yes, this does have an alky impact on the back of the palate. Strong bitter medicine. Funny when the taste is so much different than it looks. Don’t it bother you when they don’t tell you the spices? Let me guess....

Can. Pours a nice deep brown with ruby highlights and a quickly fading head that leaves a thin film of tan on the surface and some nice lacing on the sides of the glass. Aromas are nice enough... kind of a mix of pie spices, toffee and an earthy/nutty smell. Flavor is heavy with the earthiness, almost like soil and leaves after a fall rain, with a healthy dose of deep sweetness that reminds me of toffee with a bit of chocolate. The spices get muted a bit in the flavor and the beer seems a bit thin on the palate and in the finish.

On tap. Pours with a hazed deep brown hued body with a small tan head. Aromas are malty, caramel, brown sugar and light spice. Flavors are grainy, wheat, soggy malt, brown sugar, light spice, some clove and cinnamon. Lively bubbles, medium bitter.

Draft. Murky and chunky brown, huge tan head, good lacing. Aroma of grassy nutmeg and allspice. Taste is spiced brown cinnamon bread. Nice.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 11/10/2011. This beer is a dark brownish-amber color with a medium foamy tan head that recedes slowly. Aroma of sweet malt, cherry and spice. Medium body with a nearly cloying sweet caramel malt character plus notes of fruits and spices. The finish is sweet with a toasty malt and ginger aftertaste. Decent overall.

Can on 01/06/2011 from Wine and Beer Westpark. Mostly clear dark brown body with a medium creamy tan head. Spice and grainy aroma. Dry spice and astringent grain flavor. Medium body with moderately high carbonation.

Can. Mahogony beer with a nice cream colored head. Malt and spice aroma. Malt/toffee flavor with dark red fruit and light spice. Medium bodied. Big red fruit lingers with toffee and light spice. Tastes slightly infected.

Dark brown coloured body with a muddy red glow and a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, spices and a bit of cardboard with a touch of sugars. Medium-bodied; Assertive spicey and herbal flavour with a definite pungent malty and roastty note that doesn’t seem great. Aftertaste shows a lot of spice and honey with some pungent malt notes. Overall, an okay beer, but an interesting take on the season - still nice to try, since the can is cool. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from a six pack from Draeger’s Blackhawk in Danville, California on 18-March-2011 sampled in Danville, California.

wow, what a miss! for such an otherwise stellar brewer like 21st amendment, this is awful. I could have made a better beer in my basement with bath water and carrots. smells like pureed vegetables and brown sugar. really not a good one and i suppose its so much worse because 21st is usually great. oh well.

Sampled on draft at Smokin Joe’s in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a dark brown color with a small beige head that produced great lacing. The aroma was sweet fruit cocktail with a hint of vague spice. The flavor was sweet fruit cocktail, sugar, pear, cherry, grapefruit and pineapple The finish was long, sweet and full of fruit cocktail. Fairly full bodied. Excellent.
