Like FDR’s Depression-Era Radio Addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Celebrating the right to be original.

12 oz can into Sam Adams lager glass. Pours a deep brown murky hue with a medium head with nice retention and nice lacework. Aroma is packed: clove, cinnamon, nutmeg...metal (knowing this brewery, this will go away shortly......it does). Taste starts out sweet and then turns sour; a slight bitterness comes out as it warms. Carbonation is medium; body is medium-full; chewy. Definitely the best "winter warmer" I’ve ever had.

Can at end of the night at stags head. Pours a dark brown and tastes of sour cherries, malt, spice and toasted malts. Maybe i was a tad drunk because i really enjoyed this despite other reviews here.

Whole Foods, DC six-pack ($10): You start with a beer with a cool looking package, then you pour in and it looks very nice with a deep brown body and a large beige head. Even the aroma of wintertime spices signals a tasty brew. Upon tasting it you realize that the commercial description was correct. Improvisation in spices was the name of the game and they decided to share it a little too early. Not enough of a malty backbone. The high abv sneaks through. All in all, the beer is not a pleasure to drink.

Can. Not my favorite spiced holiday ale but it drinks pretty easily and has some interesting flavor. It tastes a bit like spiced cider with oranges. There’s a lot of English character in the caramel/toffee malt flavor. Not much in the way of hops, though some of the spice could be masking it for me. The flavor is a bit odd, but it works, at times. A fair bit of cola flavor hurts things. Mouthfeel is a bit effervescent and thin for the abv but not bad. Pours medium brown with a thin, fading head.

Out of a can, and into a glass, at Brewforia, Meridian, ID Deep hazy mahogany with a small but lasting fine tan head. A skin more like, actually. Light toasted malt aroma with some spice and cidery notes. Flavor is fairly tart and of apple cider. Light medium bodies and a bit dry. Dusty tart finish and lively carbonation, The spices are nicely balanced and is good for the style.

12 oz can shared by Dansting. Pour is a hazed ruby brown with a smallish light tan head. Aroma of not much, some light nut, along with dusty spices and a very faint mild cherry fruitiness. Taste is the mild cherry malt (a bit unnatural), moving in with a nutty roast behind that and then the spicy dusty earthiness. Palate is medium, a bit of a sharp after taste. Just ok - thanks for sharing Dan.

Can. Pours dark brown with a bubbly tan head. Aromas of dark malt and cinnamon? Near med body with moderate carb. Flavor is sort of chocolate and cinnamon with some other spicing. It’s a bit gummy. Everything I can remember from Cold Spring is short on ingredients, and this is no exception. The malt’s too thin to support the spice.

Draught. Poured red black with thin head, moderate lacing. Cinnamon spicy aroma, with sweet malt. Full bodied, spicy notes and raisiny tones. Nutty malty finish.
