Sixpoint Brownstone is based upon one of my favorite and most popular homebrew recipes; an instant classic that I’ve been brewing since my college days. The most distinguishing characteristic of the Brownstone is its aroma of fresh-baked bread, which is accomplished by using generous portions of classic Belgian specialty malt. In addition, I use a very small portion of the same malt you would find in a stout, which lends a roasted quality in addition to the usual chocolate and nutty qualities you might find in a typical brown ale.

Although brown ales typically emphasize malty sweetness, I find a balance must remain if the hop bitterness is diminished. As a result, I carefully blend ten different malt varieties and keep the Brownstone only mildly hopped. Instead of hop bitterness providing the balance, I achieve a balance among the flavors of malt: the deep caramel and malt flavors are balanced by notes of rich toffee, chocolate, a slight nuttiness and a roasted tang. It is a true session ale.

Can sample at a tasting at Beer Market. Thanks zvikar. Deep amber to brown color with a beige head. Aroma of piney hops, slightly stale, and some malt, nutty, caramelly and a bit toasty. Sweetish flavor with caramel, malt, a bit of nuts and a bitter finish with slightly stale hops. Medium-bodied. Decent.

Bottle. Orange/lime peel and light chocolate malt aroma. Dark orange-brown with moderate head. Lightly sweet chocolate malt and mildly bitter lime peel flavor. Light but very pleasant.

Aroma has some bread and caramel qualities. A nice toasted bread note along with light caramel and toffee. A light nuttiness and chocolate is also present. Clean yeast character with little to no esters and no diacetyl. No hops or alcohol present in the aroma. Pours a somewhat cloudy brown with a thin, slightly off white head that recedes to the edges fairly quickly. Light lacing with no legs. Flavor is all malt. Lots of caramel and toffee as well as nice toasted bread crust. Hints of chocolate and a nice nuttiness. A faint resinous hop flavor helps balance the malt, but the finish is mostly dark caramel and toasted bread. This has quite a bit of a Munich and Vienna malt flavor. Medium low bitterness. Medium body with medium carbonation. Finishes with some sticky sweetness to it. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall this is an interesting take on a brown ale. It doesn't have the hop character that one would expect from an American Brown Ale. Some of the malt character is nice but it is also a bit muddled with a bit too much going on. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16 oz. can from The Beer Store, Nashua, NH. $2.75. Perfect looking Ale in a mug. Dark brown with large lasting head that produced lace all the way down. The aroma is an Earthy hop covered in rich, deep malts. Flavor shows me toasted malty grains, a bit of coffee and some nuttiness. The body is lighter then you expect after smelling and tasting this. Great drinkability. Nice, moderate bitterness to balance the malts. Finely crafted Brown ale.

16 ounce can into imperial pint glass, best before 4/26/2013. Pours fairly cloudy reddish copper color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of caramel, biscuit, grass, herbal, grapefruit, pine, chocolate, toast, orange zest, and slight nuttiness. Pretty nice and pleasant aromas with decent strength and balance. Taste of caramel, toast, grapefruit, biscuit, pine, grass, orange zest, chocolate, and light nuttiness. Decent amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, citrus, pine, grass, biscuit, and light nuttiness on the finish for a bit. Pretty good flavor balance; but is very much hop forward with hardly any noticeable darker malts until after the finish. No cloying flavors or sweetness at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a farily creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost zero warming noticed on the finish. Overall this is a good brown ale. Could have use more prominent chocolate roasted flavors in my opinion; but was still nicely balanced and very drinkable. Quite enjoyable.

Can. Brown sugar, and an interesting white floral hop aroma. Brown with a small beige head. Nutty roasty malt, floral-grassy- spicy hops flavor. Medium body, lively cabonation.

Location: Draft at HopsScotch, 9/22/11

Aroma: The nose is a combination of resiny hops, roasted malts, nutty notes, and caramel
Appearance: This one pours a mostly clear mahogany color, with a tan head, and heavy lace
Flavor: The taste is similar to the nose, with roasted malts, nuts, and hops, and some good balance
Palate: The body is medium, with average carbonation, good drinkability, and a dryish finish
Overall Impression: I thought that this was an interesting, hoppy Brown Ale. Quite interesting for a brown, with more of a hop presence then you'd usually expect. This one almost has a bit of a "Brown IPA"-type feel to it.

16 ounce can from Beer Run. Pours a clear medium brown color with a monstrosity of a foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of spicy, herbal hops with brown malts and a bit of chocolate. The taste is chocolate malt and spicy, herbal hops. Thin-medium bodied. Decent.
