Whiskey sour is an experimental Belgian ale brewed with key limes and aged in oak bourbon barrels. Considerable time spent in the barrel turns this beer a deep amber hue and the flavors feature strong notes of oak, limes, whiskey, and finishes with a faint sweetness that doesn’t linger on the palate. The mouthfeel is full, yet slightly dry.

on tap @GABF-pours gold with an offwhite head. Aroma is musty, light/medium malt-caramel, wood. Taste is whiskey, musty, light/medium malt-caramel, wood.

Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Murky medium orange-brown body, thin cream head. Nose of tart brown sugar, graham crackers, citrus and alcohol, syrupy, with hints of custard. Body is tart and sweet with lime and brown sugar, graham crackers, tannic oak and whiskey. Prickly and warming.

On tap. Pours with a hazed golden body with a white head. Aromas are dominated by strong and distinct diacetyl. Beyond that there are some lemon/lime flavors, cherry and bourbon. Flavor of butterscotch and diacetyl. Cheap sour mix, bready, biscuity and some bourbon. Medium bodied with spirited carbonation. The concept was inventive and works on some levels, but there were a few execution problems that made it a less than enjoyable beer.

Draft at Churchkey. This one smelled and tasted as advertised. I’m just not sure why you would want to do that to a beer.

4oz pour at Churchkey. Pours a transparent copper amber with zero head. Big nose, coconut, vanilla, citrus, booze. Flavor is lemons, limes, vanilla, coconut cream, sugar. Medium bodied, slick finish. Tastes a lot like a whiskey sour, which I’m not sure is a good thing. That said, they did blend and get exactly what the wanted.

At Short’s Brewing Monster Tap Takeover at Churchkey. I’ll share my comments on this one by echoing the comments I made on the Key Lime Pie they make. It’s gimmicky. It’s really sweet. It’s not for everyone. Now, unlike the Key Lime Pie, this one had a noticeable pie flavor immediately off the bat. And by gum, this one really did taste like a whiskey sour. The small taster of this one was about perfect.

Sampled from the tap at NotB. Poured a cloudy orange gold with a near white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a note of creamy lime (hint of tartness) and sweet graham cracker. Flavor had more of a sour note (lime) with the creaminess that mellowed in to a graham cracker finish. Didn’t really come together for me.
