22 oz bottle poured. Surprised to see this lighter in abv than the industrial version. I guess I don’t understand the series. Dark brown pour with a patchy fizz head. So much Diamond Knot IPA over the past year, it’s fun to try a very different option. Malty aroma, but quite metallic. Flavor is a dusty malt, caramel, some dark fruit, some metallic, and a dry finish. Nice warming. Bitter nutty caramel malt linger. Pretty good beer overall.

Bottle: Light brown color with a modest beige head. Nose is malty at first, a little roast and chocolate. Some floral hops and a sweet tone. Light spices, but more malt forward with an emphasis on sweet. Same goes for the taste, but I’m picking up a separation of flavors… I can really tell where the chocolate malt ends and the 2-row begins… roasty, dark fruit, and faint spice. I’m confused… reminds me of the first time I tried Jubelale (9 or 10 years ago) so maybe I’ll come to like this over time.

On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a pretty clear dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of light spices, some fruitiness and bready notes. Flavour is cloyingly sweet, with loads of residual sugar, light spices, an syrupy malt. Way too sweet, but drinkable enough in small amounts. Okay.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Dark amber color, with medium sized creamy head. Mild aroma of caramel. Caramel flavor, with a good body strength, moderate sweetness, not really spicy; but the bitterness is too strong in the final, almost disturbing.

Tap at Norm’s Eatery and Alehouse, Seattle - 08/11/12. Chestnut brown with a thin off white head that clears to the edge and forms a pond. Nose is caramel malts, toffee, dark fruit tones. Tastes of toffee, touch of harsh and not particularly well integrated booze, paint. Medium bodied with bite, soft carbonation, bitter harsh finish. Drinkable, but below par!

Bottle from a Total Wine somewhere in Virginia. Pours a clear dark rust color with a medium sized creamy dark tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toasted malts, caramel, nuts and a spicy finish. the taste is tart fruits, cherries, spice, faint toasted malts and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.

Nice crisp old, lightish copper coloured body with an orange glow and a nice sized, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright hops, alcohol, coriander seed and a nice metallic note with some earthy bite. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy note at first then fades to a orange and citrus flavour followed by a metallic punch and then finished by a bitter earthy and super pungent nutty flavour. Aftertaste is very rich and potent and way too bittering with not much other good flavour - just strong and way too potent. Overall, an interesting beer that’s fairly complex, but a lot of the flavours are way too strong and not in a good way. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 19-January-2012 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washington on 11-March-2012.

22oz bomber from Elise split at Madison tasting. Unfiltered brown ale, nice steady west coast hop depth. Smooth malt tones, stikcy green tinged brown chocolate. Like a nut brown in a lot of respects, this is a pretty solid offering. Some cookie dough in the finish. Well balanced, well done

Bottle shared by someone at Madison tasting. Pours a clear brown with a gray head that dissipates nearly completely. Aroma has a decent amount of sweet grain with some backing earthy grains and must. Flavor has lots of earthy grains with a bit of sweet grains and a light chocolate note.
