Cryptical packs a wallop of dark malt flavor. The beer weighs in at 8.8% ABV and has dark, fruity flavors, like raspberry, plum and star anise. Cryptical is dry-hopped with American Hops to balance out its full body with a floral aroma.

Tap at Churchkey. Woah, nice. Poured an extremely dark brown-black color. Aroma was roasted malts, chocolate, and a nice touch of coffee, other spice (maybe the advertised anise?). Flavor is coffee, roasted malts, and a slight hint of chocolate.

Growler from the brewery. Pours a pitch black color with a huge, massive tan head that grows from nothing until it totally exceeds the volume of the glass and if you’ve filled the glass more than a third, spills all over you and damn near all over the couch. Needless to say, the head retention is good, and there are gobs of lacing all over the place. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke, faint bitter chocolate, coffee and earthy hops. The taste is bitter roasty notes, leafy bitter hops, coffee. Medium bodied. Not bad, not good, a fair bit disjointed. Starr Hill continues to disappoint with their big beers.
