Thistle, charred oak, black currant, and smoke nose. Clear dark ruby brown, medium tan head, good lace. Tart currant and smoke flavor. Finishes with plum skins. Light body. Not the least bit hoppy or very bitter. Not really what I call a black IPA. Drinks much more like a good porter.

I started the evening at Taphouse with this beer, and it was a great start to a fantastic night. This one was very dark brown, not quite black, with a thick beige head. Aroma of black pepper, spice, grass, straw. Taste of dark roasted chestnuts, pine, pumpernickel bread, with a moderately bitter finish. Black IPS are a really good idea, and this one is a very nice example of the style.
