Yearly, ending in 2017, we brewed Fluxus to celebrate the anniversary of our first beer sold—July, 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for “continuous change” and in the spirit of change, every year we brew Fluxus with a different recipe.

Weighing in at 10.3% ABV, it is one of the strongest beers that Allagash has ever brewed. This beer utilized a unique brewing process that used wort from a smaller brew, as the "water" for mashing the grain for this brew. Maine grown barley was used as the base for this grain bill that also included a blend of three roasted malts and oats. Fluxus was appropriately hopped with both US Saaz and Glacier hops. Just before knock out, fifty pounds of Taza roasted Cacao nibs were added to the whirlpool. The result is a thick, sticky stout with tons of both roasted and chocolate flavors, aromas of tobacco and cocoa, and a surprisingly sweet, creamy finish.

750ml bottle.
Jet black, large mocha head.
Aroma is odd..... Bitter cocoa, burnt malt, a weird sweet/sour leathery malts. Some sweet berries come through also. The flavor is more of the odd sweetness, almost lactic, and it mingles with an intense burnt malt and burnt espresso. The finish is cut and dry bitter.

750mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of cocoa nibs, some licorice or anise, almost no roast and no coffee notes. Flavour seems vinegary and plasticy, infected bottle?, with some tart cherry, acetone, vinegar and no sign of the cocoa nibs. Is this right? Seems either infected or poorly put together. Not too enjoyable.

Thanks to adneilsen for sharing - black pour, with light ruby hints around the edges - nose of bittersweet chocolate, vanilla bean, light blueberry notes, lightly acidic black malt, a hint of smoke, dough - flavor of bittersweet chocolate, light acidity, roast, blueberry, caramelized sugars - finish is medium dry, ash and smoke - a nice, balanced imperial.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin dark brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, roasted malt, and soy sauce. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, wood, malt, roasted malt, and some soy sauce, leading to a dry roasted finish. The alcohol tickles the tongue.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of sincereNC. Pours black and close to opaque with a vague orange hue and a small light brown head. Intense, sweet roast in the nose, somewhat spicy too. Solid body, hard roast, yet sweet, fruity and a little spicy. Quite some chocolate. Heavy malt astringency. Nice though. 290311
