Inspired by Northern California’s brewing history, this California Bitter is as inviting as the Redwoods. Smooth and drinkable, this ale has a well rounded malt character accented by Cascade and Centennial dry hops.

Tap at stags head. Chose this pleasant session ale to break up. Y otherwise heavy flight o beer. Pours dusty and a nose of citrus. Tastes of spicy dry hops, some malt, earth, and lightly astringent citrus. Relatively pleasant but a touch watery. Refreshing

On tap at Beer Republic during SF Beer Week, what a week! Pours clear deep gold with copper hues and tan head and some nice sheet lacing. The aroma offers up some mildly roasted malts mixing with some spicy hops that create sort of a fresh spicy wood sensation like redwood maybe. Maybe this aromatic is just fresh crisp resiny spicy hops since the flavors seem to support this. I get big brash and fresh resiny bitter spicy hops that take on a spicy wood feel. Behind this are milder notes of sweet malts and roasted malts. Nice crisp brash stuff here that is pretty far away from most bitters I have had and I’m totally fine with that.

Red pour on draught. Thin head. Hop aroma. Medium body malt with many of what seemed to me like tea notes. Sweet malt with tea in the finish.

Cask at Rattle N Hum. Hazy amber body with orange highlights. Frothy off-white head slowly diminishing. Aroma of caramel, cooke and toasted grain. Notes of herbs, grass, lemon and earthiness. The flavor is lightly bitter and lightly to moderately sweet. It finishes lightly to moderately bitter and lightly sweet. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Nicely bitter and more so than classic premim bitters, but then that’s why this is a California style bitter, I guess. Yet it’s not so bitter as to overpower the caramel notes. Easy drinking.

Location: Tap at Blind Tiger, 5/9/10
Aroma: Resiny/citrus hops and caramel on the nose
Appearance: Clear caramel-orange color with a thin, lasting white head
Flavor: Taste is fairly hoppy with a nice malt presence as well
Palate: The body is light-medium with average (plus) carbonation
Overall Impression: This beer is solid. I like it, a nice, flavorful beer. I'm pretty sure I've tried this one before, but I had never rated it prior to yesterday's sampling.

On tap at Vintage. Pours a darkish amber with a little bit of head and aromas that can best be described as soapy with a little bit of grass and citrus. Flavor is pretty soapy and comes across to me as watery with a grassy and grapefruity finish. The hops is a little underdone for my liking, but it’s solid enough.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. A bitter? Please. Pours a clear deep golden copper color with a medium head. Fair head retention and lacing. Hoppy aroma with resin, pine and floral notes. The taste is very hoppy and bitter with resin, herbal and slight metallic notes along with some toasted malts, caramel and light fruity notes. Medium bodied.
