The Southampton Publick House now occupies the space that was once Herb McCarthy’s Bowden Square Restaurant. Herb McCarthy’s was the place to be in the Hamptons for more than two generations. Those who remember him still speak fondly of "old Herb", who held court at Bowden Square from 1936-1986. He was rarely seen without his Chef’s coat and trademark kerchief.

2004, Bottle #478/500. The best barleywines rival the best Imperial Stouts, in my humble opinion. This is yet another great barleywine, of which I’ve sampled several in the last few months. Murky red-brown body, thin clumping off-white to beige head. Strong, sweet aroma of candied fruits, raisin, prune, caramel, and brown sugar balancing grapefruity, piney hops. Flavor was very sweet, plummy, with raisins and prunes, toast, and caramel balancing (and really overpowering) grapefruity, piney hops. Some alcohol was evident in the body too. Tangy, perhaps a bit too much so (this beer’s only flaw). My kind of barleywine. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for sending this one west!

2004 bottle# 445. Cellar temp Rich amber color with a small fleeting head. Laces the glass nicely as it’s swirled. Intoxicating carmel aroma with maybe some pie crust too. Smooth sweetness tempered by a dry bitter finish. Not overly heavy palate which hides all traces of alcohol. This should be even better in a few years.

[Bottle 289 - the one pictured] An unclear dark red beer with no head. The aroma is sweet with notes of hops, grass, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet and very hoppy and grassy, so much that it bites the tongue. A very nice beer. Thanks to Jeppe (Bierkönig) for sharing this bottle.

2002 Bottle #461 of 500:
Very dark brown colour with ruby highlights. Thin large-bubbled tan head. Super-sweet aroma of caramel, pit fruits, caster sugar and slightly chocolate. Other aroma of hops, figs, and green grapes. Full-bodied; Astringent opening followed by a mellow maltiness mixed with the afformentioned fruits. Sort of shallow for a barley wine, but initally comlex. Aftertaste dwindles and only shows some minute sweetness and an alcoholic warming. Dryed palate and left warm and bittered. Overall, this beer is pretty good, but could use a little work. This bottle easily has a year on it, and it most likely wont improve much with more time. A good attempt, but not worthy of its brothers-Grand Cru, Biere De Garde, etc. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it as #713 in the year.

2003 - 12oz bottle number 128 of 500 - MMM, very complex, even for a barleywine - chocolate, roasted oats, cherries, raisins, brown sugar, molassas, and somehow they all work together - a little astrigent at first, but mellows as it warms - very impressive for such a young example - Southampton does it again.

Fiery amber; slightly hazy. Lots of bitterness. Hop juice style, but a good dose of thick chewy malt. Could be a good one, but it''s young now. $9 US for a 341ml bottle- yikes!
