Of course, oatmeal in beer isn’t a new idea. For centuries brewers have added oats to the mash, giving the resulting beers – usually stouts – silky smooth textures. But how best to create the flavors we had in mind? Out in Jersey City (NYC’s 6th borough), Tom’s friends at Feed Your Soul Bakery make some of the tastiest oatmeal cookies we’ve ever had. After talking to the bakers (and eating a lot of cookies), we brewed a beer from floor-malted barley malt, golden oats, raisins, brown sugar, honey, vanilla beans and a subtle dash of spice.
Brooklyn Cookie Jar Porter brings all these flavors together with light chocolate, coffee and caramel flavors to create a beer that will warm up the coldest nights, even if you don’t have a peat fire. It’s very nice by itself, but perhaps even better with roasted pork, barbecue, or traditional Mexican mole dishes. Or, of course, some oatmeal cookies and ice cream.

Pours dark w/minor head. Aroma is vanilly. Taste is the same, I kind of convinced myself it was cookie doughed up. Alcohol camouflaged but can bomb you quickly.

On cask at the Whole Foods / CCB Cask Event. It pours deep mahogany with ruby edges and tan head mixing with lighter white foam looking regions. The aroma is overall pretty light in strength bringing up spices, prunes, coriander, yeasty spices, malts and prunes. The taste is pretty smooth and sweet with sweet malts, chocolate malts as well as prunes and plums like dark fruitiness to go along with some malt roastiness around the edges. Prunes, cherries and plums seem to head this thing off into the after taste.

Sampled on draft at the Headkeeper in Greensburg PA this beer poured a dark black color with a medium sized creamy tan head that lingers and produces decent lacing. The aroma was lightly toasty and malty. The flavor was sharp raisin and rum with toasty malts and an odd sour fruit undertone that was very difficult to place. There was a touch of molasses underneath. The finish was long with sour raisin and rum. Moderately full bodied. Interesting.

A deep dark brown porter with a thin moka head. A smooth sweet aroma of chocolate and butterscotch, with light berry notes. In mouth, a sweet porter with vanilla notes, woody, a bit underwhelming and cloying. Medium bodied. On tap at Afterwords Café, Feb. 2010.

Draft: Bready aroma with chocolate and raisin notes. Black with a medium tan head, good lacing. Brown sugar and cinnamon flavor. Raisin finish that leans a bit vinous and tart. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Delicious beer that really hits the mark. Appropriately named and superbly crafted. Unique experience. Thank you Garrett!

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very dark brown color appearing black in the glass. Fair head retention but decent lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of chocolate, oats and caramel. The taste is chocolate, floral hops, caramel, oats, raisins and a bitter hoppy finish. Medium bodied. Interesting beer./

Location: On tap at Hop Devil Grill, 2/10/10
Aroma: Roasted malts, raisins, chocolate, and nuts
Appearance: Dark brown color with a tan head
Flavor: Sweet roasted malt flavor, raisin, oatmeal
Palate: Medium body, smooth and drinkable
Overall Impression: At first I was feeling a lot of sugary sweetness in this one, but there are some other parts to it as well. It turns out to be a pretty nice porter, it has a lot of flavor, and though it is a touch too sweet, I did like it.
