Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

12 oz bottle, thanks to my friend bringing some back from Colorado. Pours a copper color with a medium white head that lasts for quite some time. The aroma is a sweet malt caramel, some citrus, and a little bit of biscuit. Flavor is a earthy taste with hops, citrus, and a touch of caramel.

On tap at Flying Saucer. Pours a copper color with a medium white head. The aroma is spicy malt and floral. Good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is a sweet malt with a nice spicy finish. A good ESB from New Belgium.

Light amber color. Metallic aroma of resins. The flavor is quite malty, with some sweet caramel, and a quite strong bitterness. Drinkable.

Draught at Toronado, San Francisco. Orange-brown, clear, no head. Berryish nose. Medium sweet with rounded mouthfeel. Warming and soft, caramelly with notes of cardamom. Low-medium bitterness.

Bottle. Poured clear amber with lasting white head. Some lacing. Aroma of flowers, hops, toast and roast. Light to medium body with a hoppy note and a malt bone. Fast finish.

Bottle from Bottle Barns Gift Pack, Santa Rosa; Nose of piney hops and a light spiceness; copper-orange with a medium, glass-lacing straw head; flavor of caramel, spices, and hop bitterness in a medium body with a hoppy finish. Good bitter.

Bottle. Nice amber pour with a little bit of an off-white head that is starting to lace. Aromas are dominated by caramel malts and a pine/resin hops presence. Flavor is fairly malty with a bit of a hops kick at the end. Malt presence is a mixture of caramel and grain dust. Almost has an \"amber ale\" feel to it...

Clear and pale orange pour with white, diminishing head. Semi-sweet aroma with notes of grain, bread and fruits (peach). Some notes of resin. The flavor is notably sweet and moderately bitter. Fizzy carbonation. Medium body and nice mouthfeel. Seems to lack focus and oomph for a winter beer.

Not so great! Actually it could be really good but I don’t like the choice of hops here, and that just ruins it for me. The aroma starts very interesting and hoppy, both spicy and woodsy. But those aromas don’t work well in the flavor, where its too harsh, bitter, and woodsy/herbal. This is much like Fat Tire, which could be an OK amber but I hate the hops used in that one too! As to style, I think of this like a modified alt. It has the same slightly caramelized malt palate, that is clean and med-light, and a focus on bittering hops. What makes this unique is the finishing and dry hops - it is also unfortunately what kills this beer.

Pour is a amber with a average white head. Aroma is a bit peppery but bit dusty and cardboard. Flavor is really thin with some thin malts and not much else. Do no get what the raters found who rated this a 4+. Below is right for this brew.
