A black beer brewed with roasted barley malt and challenger hops. Then freshly ground Arabica coffee beans, blended especially for Dark Star, are added to the copper for a few minutes after the boil to provide a rich and complementary coffee aroma. NOT EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA!

Cask @ Akkurat. Heavy bitter and roasted coffee notes in aroma aswell as taste. Also some licorice. The creamy light texture smoothens and adds some drinkability. Nice!

Having tried this a few times late in the evening at festivals I was keen to give it a more considered tasting. The beer tastes exactly as promised, of cold coffee with perhaps a little fag ash. The aroma, is coffee and cigarettes. The appearance an appealing coffee black. The taste.. coffee and fags. The palate is a little thinner than you would expect from a stout, but in keeping with the notion of a coffee beer, so suitable. The beer is a one trick pony, and I grew a little bored of it near the bottom of the bottle, but it’s a fun beer, that fulfills it brief consummately. I’d happily recommend trying it once.

Cask, half-pint served in a mug at Southampton Arms. Jet black body. Shiny black surface. Slightly roasted coffee malts to the nose. Taste of cold coffee grounds supported by hints of chocolate. Thin bodied. Ok, a little disappointing, though (London, 06.11.2012).

Cask @ York Tap 1/11/12
Very dark brown, thin tan head, good lacing
Aroma of soft roasted malts, good quality coffee
Taste - nice smooth dark mellow roasted malts, soft premium coffee, touch of dark bitter chocolate, no hops, good flavour for abv
Palate - soft carb, thin to medium body, texture smooth and quite oily, good smooth dark malts. Finish as main flavour, smooth
Overall - This was a good, tasty coffee stout for the abv

Cask at Birmingham Beer Fest 2012; Almost black colour, roast malt and chocolate aroma, shock horror this tasted a bit like a strong coffee with some hint of chocolate. Just a slight bit of hop bitterness towards the end. Slightly watery mouth feel. Very good stout.

Gravity dispense at the twelfth Twickenham Beer Festival - 18/10/12. Mid black in appearance with a frothy tan head. Big roast nose backed up with a great espresso aroma and a little smoke. Rich roast malt taste with espresso in the background, caramelised sugar. Medium bodied with a low level of carbonation lending towards a dry and bitter finish. Excellent cask coffee stout, so much more life than the bottled version!
