A black beer brewed with roasted barley malt and challenger hops. Then freshly ground Arabica coffee beans, blended especially for Dark Star, are added to the copper for a few minutes after the boil to provide a rich and complementary coffee aroma. NOT EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA!

50cl bottle @ Vlaamsche Reus, Wageningen. Pitch black color, small beige head. Smell roasted malts, a lot of coffee and espresso. Taste roasted and dark malts, earth, slightly metal, again a lot of espresso and some coffee. Low carbonation, low body.

Cask at CP&K. It pours deep ruby, with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, coffee, light smoke, leather and a touch of chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit, light acidity, leather and some bitter chocolate, with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Alright.

Cask @ O’Connell’s, Tampere. Rated on 05.11.2010
Aroma has lots of espresso and some chocolate. Flavour has some well roeasted espresso and hints of caramel. Feels a bit like a light brown ale. A bit watery but espresso notes are rather nice here. A bit worse than the bottle version.

Aroma has lots of espresso, some licorice and hints of chocolate. Flavour is also rather rich on espresso. Also some semi‐dark chocolate and hints of licorice. A bit watery but espresso notes are rather nice here.

Poured into an English pint glass from 500ml bottle (jan ’12). Very dark in colour almost black, nay off black, dark brown when held to the light (search light !). A small head which is creamy/brown/white in colour, soon gone. Good strong coffee bean/espresso aroma’s hit the nose instantly - it does what it says on the bottle for sure! It tastes of coffee, bitter sweet chocolate and roasted malts, but most definately coffee coming at you hard and fast! Only 4.2% ABV so not a chewy beer at all, quite a thin body, but this doesn’t detract from the enjoyment. a little bitter and dry aftertaste in the mouth. Not a patch on the cask version - but still an enjoyable drink.

500ml bottle. Clear darkest brown with average to huge frothy to creamy lacing tan head. Slightly roasty dark malt aroma, disguised coffee touch. Soft palate, light bodied, taste is slightly sweet dark malty, a roasty touch, decent coffee notes in the finish, minimally dry. Slightly unbalanced, I guess the coffee doesn’t really make out an improvment.

Bottle. Opaque black beer, thick tan head. Fresh ground coffee nose. Slightly dry palate. Does what it says on the tin! Fresh espresso coffee. Mild minerals. Unapologetically espresso!
