This saison has been infused with a herbaceous blend of Stone Farms and locally harvested sage, lemon thyme, rosemary and parsley and dry-hopped with Citra hops for a refreshing finish. First brewed in 2010, this citrusy farmhouse ale was named Saison du BUFF in tribute to the ad hoc coalition that Sam (Dogfish Head), Bill (Victory) and Greg (Stone) formed in 2003. Called Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor (BUFF), it was their way to show the beer industry that they were banding together to make room on the shelf for craft beer. Six years later this farm-to-kettle beer still boasts the use of freshly picked local herbs as well as Citra and Centennial hops to infuse crisp, savory, mouthwatering flavors.

22 oz. bottle from Ryan and Casey’s Liquors marked 2012 on bottle neck. Tulip glass shows hazy gold with light soapy head. Nose is all the herbs the brews mention. Mostly sage. Flavor again is very herbal and Earthy. Light cracker and lemon notes. Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme are all there with some pale malts. Overall for me it is thirst quenching but I can’t drink a large amount of it. One and done.

Bottle: Poured a hazy yellow orange with a thin white fast evaporating head. Aroma is a nice mix of hops and spices. Taste is nice hops forward and mixed spices, finish is dry with a slight funkiness.

At a tasting, thanks eyes_wide_shut and YK23, small creamy head, a bit hazy pale lemon yellow, citrusy aroma with mint, rosmery and sage, some white fruit in the back, citrusy piercing sour and bitterness, semr light malty sweetness in the back, long strong, sour bitter aftertaste. Fresh and excellent.

12oz bottle. Slightly hazy yellow-tan body. Thin, lacy white head. Mellow golden malt backbone, clean and nice...well, clean until the big, peppery Saison yeast and the herbal flavors added. I’m not really a fan of the spiced American Saison, but this one is anchored in quality and good execution. Sort of like a DFH, maybe an odd Stone...not sure where Victory came in. Solid beer overall.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pale cloudy gold pour with a white head. Nice orange peel aroma. Cardoman and citrus notes. Slight short bitter finish. Very refreshing.

On tap the Stagshead. Pours hazy yellow with fluffy white head. great herbacious nose. tastes is super fresh and you really get the rosemary and thyme which is odd for a beer but totally worked. its also yeasty, with black pepper, floral, and citrus. I had one of the previous versions at GABF a few years ago but this version was really nice

Bottle. Musty yeast, lemon malt and lemon peel aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Lightly sweet lemon and yeast flavor. Musty, dry finish. Body very light. Not bad - wish it had more malt flavor.

Bottle. Pours clear honey amber with a medium white creamy head and beautiful lacing. Aroma is pine, honey, malt, and definite herbs, including sage. Flavor is about the same, lightly spicy. Definitely interesting.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dirty beige color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of rustic malt with lingering sweetness and some sage and light rosemary notes. Taste is a great balance mix between some sage and rosemary mix in with some rustic malt with bready notes with light floral undertones and some lingering sweetness. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed this beer and must admit that all three version were quite good.
