With the arrival of bock beer, the brewers mark the start of autumn. In the old days this was the first beer that was made after the summer with the fresh harvest of malt and hop. Hertog Jan was the first in The Netherlands who brewed Bockbier top-fermenting. This way, the flavor of the beer comes to its own better. Hertog Jan Bockbier has a pronounced full and creamy flavor, in which a slight whisp of caramel can be found.

Donker rood-bruin bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is krachtig, bitterzoet met iets van karamel, toffee, noten en rozijnen. Erg goed.

300 ml. bottle. 2015 Vintage. BBF 04/2017. Deep red brown, little tanned head on the sides. Nose is weirdly unpleasant moldy herbs syrup, rotting dark fruits & cleaning agents,… Taste is a bit better weird heavy fish guts notes mixed with syrup, caramel, herbal, syrup, root beer, red fruits, herbal caramel,… Lots of weird notes. I expected this to be either boring or unpleasant not freaking bizarre. Thinned, varnish syrup. Weird, partially enjoyable even if only for the strangeness of it all.

[9/28/15] Bottle on a bench at Dam square in Amsterdam. Drank straight from the bottle. Aroma of malt, caramel, dark fruit and a bit of toast. Sweet caramelly flavor, sugary, with some dark fruits, licorice, light toastiness, and a bitterish finish with some alcohol. Kinda sticky mouthfeel.
