With the arrival of bock beer, the brewers mark the start of autumn. In the old days this was the first beer that was made after the summer with the fresh harvest of malt and hop. Hertog Jan was the first in The Netherlands who brewed Bockbier top-fermenting. This way, the flavor of the beer comes to its own better. Hertog Jan Bockbier has a pronounced full and creamy flavor, in which a slight whisp of caramel can be found.

0,3 l bottle from Albert Heijn XL in Roermond. Clear dark red brown, sticky tan head. An absolute beauty! Weak aroma of molasses, caramel and candy sugar. Taste is the same with some sweetness. Thick texture, almost no carbonation. Some subtle bitterness in the end. First Bock for me this year, a really good one!

Draught @ Hertog Jan, Venlo. Pours hazy dark brown with airy but stable off-white head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel and yeast, with fruity touches. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt and fruit, with subtle hoppy and roasty touches. Bitter aftertaste with estery hints. A nice one.

Top-fermented Dutch dark bock making use of wheat malt. Beige, regular, sticky head, colour a dark copper. Malt sweet aroma, caramel and chocolate as usual, pear, orange, rhum. Taste malty, sweetish, lightly toasted bitterishness, coffee, smooth and only lightly hopped finish. Very typical for its style.

Way too sweet bock beer. Tastes like licorice water, very nasty. They should change this.
