With the arrival of bock beer, the brewers mark the start of autumn. In the old days this was the first beer that was made after the summer with the fresh harvest of malt and hop. Hertog Jan was the first in The Netherlands who brewed Bockbier top-fermenting. This way, the flavor of the beer comes to its own better. Hertog Jan Bockbier has a pronounced full and creamy flavor, in which a slight whisp of caramel can be found.

Dark red colour. Aroma of caramel and malts. Sweet caramel taste but also quite bitter too. Not particularly flavoursome. Leaves an unpleasant bitter aftertaste.

Sweet malty nose. Opaque ruby brown colour, creamy tan head, small layer rests after a while, good, lacing. Aroma roasted malt, chocolate, sugar syrup, dried fruits (plums, raisins), vinous impression. Taste medium sweet and bitter, by no means as sweet as you would expect from the aroma, some light fruity sour notes. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, roasty bittersweet finish but now are the sweet accents stronger than in the taste, also those fruity notes continue. Not your typical Dutch bock.

30cl Bottle: BBD Mar 2014, poured into an Augustijn chalice at home on 7th Jun 2013. Deep, dark ruby red in colour with an off-white head that thinned out very quickly: although it did leave some sticky lacing on the chalice as the beer level sank. Sweet and malty from the start, the nose has a fruity, alcoholic maltiness with a yeast undertone. The taste is also malty sweet: I know the Dutch seem to brew sweet Bocks and this is no exception. Mild coffee notes take away any thoughts of over-sweetness but a chocolate feel to the flavour brings it back again. Luckily I like sweet beers: this is a sweet toothed beer fans heaven.

Flaske 0,3l. Gave fra Mieke. Tusen takk! Mørk rødbrun. Mye bobler på glassveggen. Høyt luftig skum med en god del filigranser på glasset. Skummet varer noen minutter. Beskjeden maltaroma. Litt røyk. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken er mørk frukt. Plommer. God fylde. Svakt røykpreg.

Bottle from Albert Heijn. Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue. The head was thin, tan and broken. The aroma is weak but does contain fruit and malt. The flavour is bitter with chocolate and liquorice. It’s a little less sweet than many boks, which makes it easier for a session and keeps the dentist happy!
