17 August 2019. At Gents Bierfestival X. Cheers to Anke, Kevin & the crew! Hazy orange, lasting, small, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of coffee bean, raw vanilla, ripe mango, orange peel, pineapple, white chocolate, almond. Taste is light to medium malty sweet, balancing fruity notes of peach & pineapple with chocolate & vanilla; some bitter orange peel after that, with a spicy & bready touch, very low on (powdery) coffee roast. Dryish, earthy hoppy finish, lingering coffee bean, vanilla & chocolate with warming liqueur-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Interesting and actually quite successful experiment, nice balance between 'light' Ale & 'dark' Stout elements.

Clear light brown with soapy head. Aroma and flavour are dominated by sweet, spicy Tonka. No!

Experimental Dutch beer echoing Lervig’s acclaimed 3 Bean Stout (and similarly flavoured with cocoa nibs, coffee beans and tonka beans), but instead of copying this well-known example, Natte Gijt decided to throw in a somewhat controversial idea and make this a blonde stout instead of a black one. Sampled at Gents Bierfestival, thanks Craftmember for sharing. Snow white, mousy, opening, irregularly edged, shred-lacing head, misty deep peach golden blonde robe. Aroma of cinnamon, almond, white chocolate, caramel, baked banana, honey, rum, a faint whiff of coffee and spicy phenols (almost medicinal, really). Cleanly fruity onset, apricot, baked banana and pineapple notes, medium carbonated, full oily body, sweet and smoothly caramelly malt sweetness drenched in aromatic tonka bean effects (cinnamon, vanilla-ish, marzipan almost) with a chocolatey touch from the cocoa nibs but very little coffee; remains sweet with very low hop bitterness, and ends quite boozy with a lot of brandy-like, heating alcohol. The smoked aspect is hardly noticeable. As such, a desserty, aromatic sipper, very interesting and unique so have an extra point for that, but I maintain that in this day and age, a blonde beer can never be called a ‘stout’ (the same way a dark beer in Belgium should never be called a ‘tripel’). The smoked aspect could have been much stronger and then we would have a tonka- and cocoa-flavoured Rauchbier (I’m ignoring the coffee because that aspect remains very understated in this beer) – maybe not such a bad idea, now that I come to think of it.

Little cloudy blond to orange beer, small creamy off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of tonka beans all right, sugary, cinnamon notes, sweet impression. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of tonka bean, alcohol, soft roast, little bitter, coffee, more alcohol. Aftertaste: sugary, alcohol, soft roast, very intense, tonka, nice!

Fles gedeelt door Roelzie1986, geprobeerd in Aarle Rixtel. Het is een troebel amberkleurig bier met een dun schuim. Het heeft een fruitige wat kruidige geur. De smaak is moutig en fruitig.

Bottle. Golden pour. Aroma of malt, orange, tonka, coffee and caramel. Taste has caramel, tonka, malt, bitter orange, pineapple, some coffee and citrus. Tastes more like a hoppy strong ale with tonka. Weird, but enjoyable.

0.33 l bottle from 'Het Biermoment', bottled in December 2018. Slightly hazy, amber with a very thin, frothy, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, a bit roasty aroma of tonka beans, caramel, honey, coffee and some cocoa. Quite sweet, malty, slightly bitter, a bit roasty taste of caramel, honey, lots of tonka beans, coffee and some cocoa, followed by a short, moderately bitter, a bit roasty finish. Almost full-bodied, oily mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Nice beer if you like tonka beans, I still prefer my Stouts dark.
