Holy elderberry!!!

When we moved to a new brewery in Jastrebarsko in the summer of 2015, we got the chance to partner up with the crew from Montenegro. These guys wanted to start their own craft beer story in Montenegro, but they didn't have their own brewery. So we decided to team up and brew one beer especially for them. Since one of the co-owners, Ljubo, is from a village called Kopito (hoof) in Njeguško Polje, we named the beer Big Hoof. This was our first experience with export as well as production of beer in such a large quantity (4000L of Big Hoof loaded in a day).

Big Hoof is Brown Porter - dark ale with 4,8% ABV that you can drink all year round. Chocolate notes permeate this non-complex and highly drinkable beer.

Style: Brown Porter
Hops: Magnum

Aug. ’15. On tap at Leopold’s, Split. I thought this one was brewed in Montenegro, at least I’ve been told so. Anyway, it poured very dark, almost black body with medium sized brown head. Aroma was quite weak, roasted malt, strong mineral water, lightly on the sweeter side. Flavor was shifted a bit to the bitter side, roasted elegantly with coffee smoothed with cocoa, dark fruits etc. A bit yeasty as it got warmed. Thin to medium body with a nice chocolate malt emerging in its finish. Very pleasant, just I would prefer more body.

On tap at Hop In, Dubravka’s Square, Zagreb. Shared with lovely Anja. Very dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Strawberry, basement aroma, some toffee and caramel. Refreshing after a sip, light roasty. Thin body and soft carbonation. Some cardboard flavors. Light roasty finish lingers.

On tap at Ro & Do Zagreb. Dark brown (nearly black) coloured, medium sized brownish head, slight acidity in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, light chocolate and mild dried fruits with again some acidity in the finish. Not bad but rather light stuff.

On tap at Cajt. One of two kegs available outside of Montenegro. Chestnut, murky dark brown. Tan head. Subtle aroma, sweetish, malty, caramel, dusty, creamy. Light, slightly subdued, soft taste. Light caramel, vaguely toasty, vague raisins. Damn drinkable, to style, not entirely my style but exactly what they aimed for.
