Inspired by the American take on our own IPAs, this blend of five American hops that gives a fragrant aroma that make it perfect for summertime drinking. The image on the label represent the Golden Gate bridge which is a famous feature of San Francisco, where American IPAs originated in the 1970s, kicking off the West Coast's micro brewing revolution.

[500ml bottle from Beers of Europe] Pours an orangey-amber with a moderate lasting beige head and a medium fizz. Good rich mouthfeel. Orange and the lovely sweet bready Adnams malt up front. Gingery spice comes through, followed by pine and lime and a little hint of tropical fruit. A mild grapefruit finish finishes it off. A typically tasty yet balanced and satisfying effort from Adnams, which shows that malt can pay a great role in a hop-lead beer. Well done!

Aroma: Caramel, toffee apple and pine domintes, but there’s a hint of citrus (green apples?)
Appearance: Hazy, amber body with a huge, lasting beige head. Very light carbonation. Lots of sticky lacing.
Taste: Tastes a little fruitier than the aroma suggests - some lychee and apricot. Subtle nutty flavour. Sweet caramel with a reasonably bitter, bitter finish. The 6.8% ABV is pretty well hidden.
Palate: Medium body with a silky smooth, oily texture. Gentle carbonation.
Overall: Beautifully balanced and conditioned. Would have liked it a bit hoppier, but I was pleasantly surprised by this. Quite malty for an American IPA.

Bottle as Marks & Spencer Southwold Summer IPA. Dark amber color with medium beige head. Aroma of grapefruit, floral hops. Taste, bitter hops with fruity and floral notes. Drinkable beer.

Aroma is fruity with some hay and peach. Also some sweet toffee. Flavour is somewhat hoppy with peach, some apricot, toffee and hints of hay. Somewhere between British and American, but closer to American anyway.

Bottle 500ml.Clear medium amber orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, caramel, moderate to heavy hoppy, citrus, orange - citrus, grass. Flavour is moderate to light light heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. (Bottle, 0.5 l, at William K Kurvi, 20120306) The beer poured deep amber and a bit hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness and toffee. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were hops, fruitiness, toffee, malts, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, malty, sweet and bitter. A British bitter with higher ABV and American hops. Not anything special, unfortunately.

Bottled. Pale copper colour, mediumsized white foamy head. Aroma is fruity, floral, wooden and mildly caramelly with some hints of slightly acidic wood. Flavour is bitter hops, some floral and fruity notes as well as a quite crispy maltyness. Rather wellmade US style IPA.

Bottle from M & S food store, Farringdon, London. This was labelled as ’Southwold Summer IPA’ it was 6.8% alc. An amber/gold coloured pour with a medium off white head. Hoppy, citrus fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, sweet, malty, citrus fruit, tropical fruit. Very well balanced and so drinkable. Hard to believe I could be impressed with an M & S beer.

Bottle from M&S at St Pancras station. 6.8%abv. Having had the Winter version a couple of times it is the Innovation. Not sure this is the American ipa on cask though as this is so much stronger. Decent hoppy aroma. Funnily enough i thought this was quite earthy so more like an english hop. The earthyness i guess is from cascades. Decent enough. Bit obvious on the abv. Ok
