With the New England summer fast approaching we release Tiny Chicken, another edition in our Small Bird Series of lower ABV, hazy pale ales. Deceivingly diminutive in name, Tiny Chicken packs a hoppy punch with a powerful combination of Galaxy and Amarillo. Engaging aromatics pop with notes of bright citrus and peach, while flavors of tropical fruit, melon, and orange sweep over the palate in refreshing waves. Finishing crisp and dry with slight earthy/spicy grain character from the use of locally malted wheat and Danko rye.

Fresh bottle drunk 5/21/16.
Heavily hazy golden, large, well-retained white head, etc...
After trying this I immediately thought of the Hill Farmstead Sumner I’d had recently. I then tried more Sumner (on draught at Adam’s house....) and was very curious to do a blind tasting. Now granted, I’d previously tried both of the beers in question, but I still wanted to see how noticeably different they were.
Indeed they are quite similar, with that same very dry, lemon lime and dry grapefruit pith character with strong minerals and ever-so-slight touches of pineapple. Very sparse cracker and biscuit-like malts provide light texture and the carbonation is tight with no alcohol or flaw.
Oddly enough, it wasn’t the hop profile, as I’d have guessed, that gave away the difference, but rather the yeast. Trillium had a much "hotter", "messier", heavily estery character to it, while Hill Farmstead’s was tight, understated, and full of clean minerality. Kind of night and day and it wasn’t even remotely difficult to tell the two apart. Just goes to show, Hill Farmstead beers are no joke. That water they’ve got up there is a blessing. Tiny Chicken was still very nice, however.

Bottle thanks to Matt. Pours a hazy orange with small white head that lasts. The aroma is tropical fruit mango and melon. Medium mouth, juicy fruit, melon, crushable, very good.

750 ml bottle, thanks ClarkVV for the share! The appearance is similar to grapefruit juice. Aroma shows a mild honey, biscuit malt and some light grassy hints. The pine isn’t noticed in the aroma but that changes in the flavor.

The flavor starts with a grassy hint and a good amount of pale malt. Flavor is lightly bitter with notes of mango, tangerine, grass and good amount of pine. Medium to lighter bodied with medium carbonation. Very refreshing and highly drinkable!

Pours deep hazy gold into a tulip. White head with medium retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Fresh mown grass and green herb aromas. Soft and sharp with upfront caramel and fresh resin and a facefull of herb.
