The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

330ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours black with a thin tan head. Big coffee aromas, some chocolate. Taste is more coffee and dark chocolate. Bit of a one-note beer, but not bad.

Bottle at home. Pours black, nose is massive roasted coffee, chocolate, taste is dry, chewy, chocolate, bitter coffee.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a thin head which disappears quickly. Nose - mainly coffee beans. Light alcohol. Taste - dark chocolate and coffee. Palate - medium to full bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - a bit too dominated by the coffee to be interesting.

Black with creamy beige head. Aroma has coffee, cocoa and some fruit. Perhaps hints of licorice. Coffee and licorice flavour, light roasted bitterness. Slightly sticky. Lasting coffee bitter finish with late cocoa powder.

Appearance is black with big beige head. Ashes, bitter chocolate, coffee. Taste is very balanced coffee, chocolate. Dry bitter finish. A solid Imperial Stout, and not even too high ABV!

Bottle. Aroma and taste both black as fuck. Lots of ashy coffeeish roasted, to the point of being slightly unbalanced and lacking complexity. Pitch black colour. Good one, but thats it.

Bottle. Pours cloudy very dark brown with small tan head. Clear aroma of roast, dark chocolate and malt. Bitter, roasty flavour with notes of dark chocolate and coffee and touches of malt and liquorice. Low carbonation. Lingering cocoa aftertaste. Well-hidden ABV. Decent but rather too coffeey.

Bottle, 8.7%. Distinct coffee aroma. Smells like ground, non-brewed beans. Also some chocolate powder in the aroma. Black colour. OK stable dark brown head. The flavour has a lot of coffee, both brewed and non-brewed. Quite sweet with a jammy note. Also some chocolate powder in the flavour. 6 3 6 3 15 Rerate about a year later. I still agree with the description of my first rating except I do not think it is very sweet, but I would rate it a lot higher today. 8 4 8 4 16

Bottle.Black colour with almost no head.Aroma of slight coffee and tart frutis,but also odd aftertaste maybe some thing wrong with this beer has kind of odd mouth feels and dry dusty finish not really good.
