The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle from gbbf 2015 and drunk at home. Black beer lasting tan head. just a top notch drinkable imperial stout. Espresso coffee aroma some choc. Balance In the mouth of malts. Dry. Not overly hoppy. Dry finish. Like a dry coffee liqueur. Excellent.

Draught. Opaque black liquid with small tan head. Aroma of coffee, chili, licorice, chocolate, light ash and dried fruits. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of chocolate, coffee, licorice and light chili. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Super good. The Prairie influence really shows.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Black body with a short-lived beige head. Light lacing. Aroma of hazelnut, coffee and milk chocolate. Flavour of hazelnut, prunes and chocolate. Medium body with a creamy texture. Soft fizz. The beer version of Nutella. Nice but not particularly complex.

Bottle, thanks SirLimpsalot. Black with a tan head. Aroma and taste of espresso, dark chocolate, roasted malt. Failrly bitter and with well hidden alcohol. Not bad at all.

0.33l bottle. Black body, immediately disalpearing light brown head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee with some vanilla and dark rum. Taste of chocolate, coffee, caramel and floral hops. Medium bodied and flat. The texture is creamy. OK beer.

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate and lots of coffee. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long roasted, chocolate and coffee finish. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle at Church Key, DC. Oily, black pour with little or no head. Lots of coffee in the aroma, some dark chocolate and roasted malts. It’s full bodied, smooth, oily and with a very low carbonation level. Mostly coffee in the flavor too, kept company by dark chocolate, roasted malts and a little hoppy bitterness. Lasting finish. Too one dimensional, but nice anyway. 150620

Aroma of espresso, cocoa powder, some ash, wood, liquorice, subtle dark fruits.
Taste follows this, with some more dark chocolate.
Full, oily mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes smooth, roasty, dry, with coffee, chocolate, cocoa, some liquorice.
Very tasty! Really smooth and comfortable, with a wonderful coffee. Maybe not as complex as other big Imperial Stouts, but with a perfect balance instead and offering everything a coffee Stout should have.
