“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

(Draught at BrewDog Stockholm, 4 Sep 2015) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of freshly ground coffee, dark chocolate and cacao. Malty, roasted taste with lots of coffee, cacao, dark chocolate, liquorice, salmiac and a generous coffee bitterness. Almost full body, with balanced sweetness. Great imperial stout with an impressive coffee and cacao character. Lovely beer.

Bottle at Derek’s, thanks for sharing. Coffee, and lots of green pepper. Heavy roast, low carbonation and a thick, heavy palate. There is some chocolate character, and the coffee is well done but I do not like the green pepper I am tasting. Still, this is a good beer.

Bottle. Pours near black with a creamy dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has kind of a smokey coffee note with a good amount of dark grains with a strong roasted malt note. Flavor has a good amount of strong roasted malts and smokey coffee with an earthy dark grain backbone.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours black with a vague, reddish hue and a small, light brown head. Heavy, almost juicy, coffee aroma. Rich, sweet, malty body, coffee alright but also dark, dried fruits, chewy and delicious. 290915

Bottle from Beers’n’more. Aroma is mostly coffee and chocolate, unsurprisingly. Some caramel too. Enjoyable sweet taste, round and smooth. Besides that, it’s a decent ImpStout, but also not an outstanding one.
