“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

At Amsterdam Craft Beer Fest 2016. Pitch black with a light brown head. Sweetish-malty, very roasty aroma of lots of coffee, dark chocolate, some licorice and hazelnut. Sweetish-malty, rather roasty taste of dark chocolate, coffee, hazelnut and some vanilla, followed by a medium long, medium roasty-bitter finish. Medium to full body, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very good!

Very good beer. Pretty much follows the brewery’s description. Coffee is a little under played. Nothing too distinctive.. Good finish.

330 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light licorice/raisin, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and cocoa/coffee notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light licorice/raisin, light smoke/char, and roast/char earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light licorice/raisin, light smoke char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and cocoa/coffee flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible imperial coffee stout! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and cocoa/coffee flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Favourite Beers, Cheltenham at a knockdown price of £2. Dark, cola brown, with a slick of beige head. Boozy aroma of black coffee, with a roasted edge and hint of chocolate sweetness. Flavour was dominated by coffee beans, leading to a dry finish, with yet more alcohol to the fore. Very good.
