“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

I got this in the bargain bin at Associated (Cityfresh) in Bushwick for a whopping two dollars. Anyway, it pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, and a pretty hefty hock of hops. Taste has bitterness coming from the chocolate and hoppy directions. It even has a sort of nice spicy bite to it. That said, this is still easy to drink and pleasant to imbibe.

8.7% spaghetti western an Italian coffee stout bottle for 5 euros at La Calamita. Wonderfully potent espresso & cream nose. Intense coffee flavor on a velvety smooth black beauty of a body topped by a coffee cream head. Terrific.

Fine black body with a nice beige head. Rich aroma with some hay, herbal, chocolate and coffee. Fine thick smooth body. Fine balance between sweetness and bitterness. Soft carbonation and a bit oily. Rich coffee, hay, herbal chocolate and licorice flavor. Powerful nice impy. A bit to much hay/grassy for my likings.

Pours dark brown, minimal head. Aroma is thick chocolate and coffee. Roast bitterness all over, high IBU not really evident from the nose. Taste has many things playing around. Chocolate bitterness with a bit of booze. Cocoa nibs mixed with some dark plums and alcohol-pickled cherries. It is only in the aftertaste where hops show themselves, leaving mouth dry and sticking some needles into the roof of my mouth. Slow winter sipper, warming me up in no time.
