“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Thick brown-beige head, reasonably stable over black beer. Chocolate, tobacco, mocha, herbs. Bitter-roasted flavour, burnt, but with a sweet, thick malt underbuild. Bitter chocolated, only faint hints @ coffee. Retronasal again glimpses of green herbs. Well-bodied, slick to viscous, yet enough carbonation so it doesn’t appear very heavy. Long lasting/fading flavours. As Alex writes, this is essentialy (very) well-made. But no fireworks, no love at first sight.

Bottle from Bere Buona Birra, Milan; bb 28.02.16, L4054
Black color with medium sized brownish head. Strong and pungent coffee aroma. Smooth mouthfeel; strong flavor of roasted malt and coffee, with some chocolate and moderate sweetness; altogether it really reminds of Pocket Coffee (coffee filled chocolates).
I’m not a big fan of this type of beers, but this one is very well brewed nevertheless.

Keg at BBF ’14, day 1, 26/09/14. Light black with a moderate tan covering that dissipates to spotting and edgework. Nose carries a big coffee blast, sweet brown sugars, earthy roast, chocolate. Taste comprises coffee grinds, tirimasu, light spice, brown sugar, hints of dark fruit. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with sweet licks. Solid coffee driven impy, a little overly sweet at times but not OTT in this respect.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out peanut butter, light cocoa and a touch of roast. Flavour is about the same, with peanut butter and light roast, along with a touch of cocoa. Medium-bodied, with those peanut butter notes finishing. Very nice stuff.

330 ml Bottle purchased at Carl’s Meat Market, Kittery, ME for $6.49. Used motor oil color with slow dying tan head, no lace. Aroma is a nice heavy amount of espresso bean, baker’s chocolate and deep grain.
The body is dense and full with a light creamy texture. Flavor shows French pressed coffee, cocoa nibs, caramel, and lingering bitter coffee and roasted malt tones. I guess the "spaghetti" presence is in the form of dark grain? Really what else would make sense here? Overall, I enjoy coffee stouts and this one (while fresh) is well above average. I would love to try the barrel aged variant of this.
