“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle from Domus Birrae. Big coffee, dark chocolate, touch of vanilla, roasted malts. Shiny pitch black with tan lace. Creamy and sweet, milk chocolate, cafe au lait, bitter hop finish. A bit thin on the body. Still, good stuff.

Bottle. Black with a half inch tan head that’s soon a coat. Aroma of burnt coffee. There’s some cocoa, dough and dark sugars too, but yeesh. Smooshy, doughy texture with lowish carbonation. Coffee sits much more in the pack with the chocolate and dough, some light spice. Modest bitterness. Nice casual finish - it just wafts gently away. After a while the coffee retreats a bit revealing a plainness to the sweetness and bitterness that builds a bit.

Bottle. Black pour. Aroma of strong roasted coffee beans, malt, thick chocolate and cream. Taste has lots of roasted earthy coffee bean, bitter chocolate, roasted malt and a nice bitter hoppyness. Long rich finish. This is good stuff.

Bottle bought online from biershop.com. Pours close to black with a rich lasting mid brown head. Super aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, molassas, vanilla, coffee and milk. Medium sweetness and bitterness. Full bodied, thick texture, soft carbonation. Finish develops a slightly salty/sour edge to accompany rich roasted malt and chocolate. Very good.
