“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

18/10/2017 - draught glass @Moeder Lambic Fountainas. Black with creamy milk coffee colored head. Nose has lots of coffee, bit vanilla. Taste is coffee, some licorice, vanilla, crème brûlée, sweet ending with some booze, soft bitter roast, creamy. Very nice desert stout for me.

Tap. Opaque pitch black ale with small beige head. Aroma: lots of coffee beans, roasted malts, earth. Medium body. Medium dry taste. Massive roast & coffee. Light bitterness. Good drinkability. Nice but not my kind of impies.

Tap @So Good (Rome). Black pour with brownish cap, retention and draft. Nose is chocolate, licorice, more licorice. Mouth: licorice dominates, clean, rich. Chili mild finish, bitter too.

Flaska från SB som stått ett år. Mjuk rund och ganska snäll och lättdrucken IS med mycket kaffe och choklad. Riktigt gott.

A black beer, a head is quite small and brown. Aroma has coffee, chocolate and roastiness, some nuts, slightly harsh, maybe hint of sweet vanilla. Taste has coffee, roastiness, sweetness, hint of chocolate. Not complex but otherwise, quite nicely balanced. Full bodied, not stickyness. Tasteful and good beer.

Sample at Hot Shots in Pismo Beach. The beer is a flat black color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Patchy lacing. Aroma of roast malt, coffee and chocolate. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, espresso and cocoa. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

(bottle, 33cl) Black coloured hue with a dense and tanned foamy head. Moderately roasted malty aroma with notes of coffee beans, dark chocolate, vanilla and a whiff of alcohol. Mildly roast-bitter flavor and a present level of sweetness, medium to full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Initially slightly syrupy and roasted malt character with sweetened coffee, hints of chocolate, vanilla and liquorice; the taste is drying out mildly towards the bitter-sweet and moderately roasted finish with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and booze in the aftertaste. Okay but not one of my favourites. 07.IV.17

Bottiglia: Literally black, small tanned foamy layer; pretty solid dry nose of ashes, burnt malt, freshly ground coffee and presumably dried fruits; pretty solid bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied as expected, neither soft nor tart or harsh; lingering dry bitter finish (with a slight acidity) of coffee and roasted malt, warming alcohol detectable. Not unpleasant...
