Bottle 100 cl. Courtesy of fiulijn. Pours almost black with a vague reddish hue and a huge frothy, beige and lacing head with excellent retention. Heavy star aniseed dominates the nose - combined with some dark roast. Medium body, sweet hard roast malt, salty licorice but the star aniseed dominates. Sweet though - and somewhat cloying. Some malt astringency. 080411

Black colour, brown head, reducing to a thin layer. The aroma is mild, some cardboard, dark malt, caramel, light liquorice. Medium body strength (compared to expectations); the mouthfeel is soft, moderate residual sweetness; flavour of caramel, some dark caramel, the liquorice is quite evident, more spicy when the glass is cold, more star anise as it gets warmer, light alcohol perception overall, and well integrated. It's very clean, it's good and bold, but a bit unemotional.

The liquorice is not too strong, it's a bit more evident in the flavour and in the final, than in the aroma; medium body strength, some dark malt flavour and some soy sauce.

Black color; nice fluffy, compact head. The liquorice candies aroma comes through clearly. The body is well structured; there is a good caramel flavor, the liquorice is present but not inopportune; the sweetness level is helpful; the bitterness is correct, with also some tar in the end. Well made.

2011-03-05, draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Black color; creamy head. Mild liquorice aroma. Good body, dark malt flavor, moderate residual sweetness; the liquorice flavor is clearly present but not oppressive; the alcohol gives a warming feeling; strong bitterness. Liquorice is not my favorite flavor, but the beer is well brewed.

On tap at The Alibi Room's 200th beer menu event, pours black with a thin ring of tan head. This is a monolithic beast of potent licorice, with very subtle chocolate and roasty notes. Given that I'm not a huge licorice fan, this was still a treat.
