1 L fliptop from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours very dark brown with a pretty dark tan head. Aroma is just anise. Med + body. Flavor is dark malt, treacle, chocolate and pretty much anise. The chocolate is sufficient to balance the anise. Or at least nearly. However, for those who dislike licorice, this would seem to be one to avoid. I’m getting a little burn, and don’t know if that’s heat or hop. I think this one would be really interesting after some time in a bourbon barrel.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a relatively large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of liquorice with sweet malt backbone. Taste is dominated by liquorice with some sweet malt and black chocolate notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Liquorice is an interesting ingredient but over-dominant in this case. Not sure why they insist in bottling this in 1 litre bottle.

Bottled sample. Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin head. Fair head retention. Aroma of intense licorice, mint, bitter hops. The taste is strong licorice, mild toast and chocolate. Thin-medium bodied. Definitely a love or hate kind of beer and, well, I don’t love it.

Re-rate: Poured from 473mL can. Black with tan head. Lots of soy sauce, mild roast malt, very soft licorice. Very different from what I remember 10 years ago. Meh. Jan 4, 2014 (8/3/8/3/16=3.8): Poured from 1L bottle. Black with beige head. Very predominant licorice aroma. Taste of sweet black licorice with some bitter roasted malt. Alcohol mostly hidden. Medium body. Warning: you must like licorice otherwise you won’t like this.

1 L swingtop bottle. Pours opaque black with a thick beige head that leaves sheeting lace. Aroma is full of licorice and that’s all I really smell. Tastes just like a bag of quality black licorice, which is a good flavor in my opinion. Starts out a little sweet before turning bitter. Mouthfeel = creamy, carbonation just right. Overall, an extreme beer that tastes good and isn’t over the top for a palate that’s ready for this type of shit. For the uninitiated, stay away.

Great mix between pronounced licorice and dark imperial stout. Huge black body and head, but a sweet finish. This could have been awful but ended up quite spectacular.

A deep dark stout with a thin lacing brown head. In aroma, a smooth licorice chocolate with light minty notes, Aleppo cheese with spices. In mouth, a smooth creamy chocolate with licorice, warming alcohol, light maple, very nice. On tap at Alibi Room, March 22, 2012.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a lazing thick brown head. The aroma has notes of star anise, liquorice, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes liquorice, roasted malt, and star anise, leading to roasted finish. Thanks fiulijn for sharing.
