Bottle. Opaque black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma of licorice, coffee, chocolate, biscuit, toast and salt. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of licorice, coffee and chocolate. Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. Decent but too much licorice for my taste.

Interesting combo, the licorice is much more pronounced than I would have thought, taste more so than aroma. Pours out like black motor oil, nice fluffy beige head, slick body. Aroma is combo of chocolate licorice and burnt toast. Taste is more robust, tons of anise/licorice. A bit sweet, and lots of lingering burn.

Strong licorice nose. Mahogany, medium tan head. Licorice on the front and back end. Charcoal at midpalate and beyond. Chewy medium to full body. I like it, but I love licorice and anise. Warning: don’t drink it prior to romancing your partner. Both licorice and beer are libido inhibitors.

Purchased in Vermont. Pours a dark brown, almost black colour with a light brown coloured head. Pure black licorice nose. Some in the taste, but not as much. Wow ! What a great beer with anise and loads more. Goes down nicely for a high alcohol brew.

From notes:
From a bottle it is a dark brown with a slight head. The aroma is black licorice and the taste is coffee and some licorice notes.

Original rate: Dark brown. Big liquorice aroma, anise...dame on the palate...it’s a strong, slightly oily impy with lots of rich malts and a huge anisey blast, bit of booze. Not all that refined but I don’t think that’s the point. 2014 vintage, consumed 2020. Pours black, with a fairly thick head. This has held its condition well. It's inky and thick, seems like it's lost some carbonation. But that makes it better. The big anise character has blended into rich chocolate, sticky toffee pudding and all kinds of beautiful dark sugars. It's a lot more refined now than any fresh version I can recall. Over the course of these years I started to really wonder what I was thinking aging this, but I'm glad I did. 4 8 9 4 17 = 4.2
