Pitch black color, med brown color head. Dark chocolate, a touch of oak and grape in the nose. The mouth isn’t too roasted with treacles, coffee, oak and moderate amount of acidity. The grape notes hit the back of the throat and add a nice bit of complexity. Roasty, somewhat dry finish.

Can - Black with a tan head. Coffee, roasted malt and plain chocolate in the aroma. Roasted and chocolatey taste with some fruity hints and notes of coffee and chocolate covered liquorice.

Sample at a tasting at Systembolaget, March 2013. Black with a tan head. Aroma of fruit, roasted malt, some wood and chocolate. The same in the taste. I liked the creamy mouth feel in this one.

Pour is a black with a nice sized tan head. Aroma is a nice roasted malt with some bitter chocolate. Flavor is about the same. A nice roasted malt mouthfeel with a little coffee and chocolate left on the tounge. I don’t really get any of the oak or grape juice but this is still a pleasant stout.

12 oz can purchased as a single at Cork abd Barrel South in Lawrence, Kansas. Best By 18 APR 13 printed on the bottom rim of the can. The pour is a deep brown black with a 1/2 inch khaki head that has nice retention. The aroma is soft roast malt, red wine, and a bit of dark cocoa sweetness. The taste is sharp roast, bitter dark chocolate, a bit of grape juice, wood resin, and finishes with bitterness of the dark chocolate. Flavors were all a touch disparate, in particular the grape juice wine and roast didn’t play together all that well. The palate is medium to heavy bodied, soft carbonation and an aftertaste of wine, roast, mineral and dry ash. Finish lingers. This is an interesting beer, unique flavor expressions - not sure it was for my particular tastes, though.

From a can, pours black with a fairly large light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt predominantly, wood and dark chocolate. Flavour brings out notes of dark chocolate, roasted malts and wood upfront, with little notice of the oak or grape juice, at least until the grape juice shows up on the finish. Very smooth, chocolatey palate, and very well-balanced. Much better than the average ratings would have you believe. Great stuff.

On tap at Petrol Station. Pours a dark brown with beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is roasted malt and raisin. Medium mouthfeel with a smokey malt and roast with lingering dry finish. A good froeign stout.

Can @ home, picked up at 287 Liquor in Fort Collins. Pours a black appearance with a big dark brown head. Roasty burnt chocolate malty, mild coffee, light vanilla, light fruity aroma. Creamy, dark chocolate, somewhat woody, vanilla, mild dark fruity, roasty flavor. There’s a fruity character to the beer but it’s hard to detect grape per se.

Can - not sure why I bought this, as I was ambivalent about their last stout experiment - looks nice, at least - nearly black, with a thick, lasting lace - sadly, the nose comes in at the low end of my expectations - it pretty much smells like a stout mixed with Welch’s grape juice - fairly strong roast and char clash with thre sweetness of the grapes - the flavor is a little better, but only slightly so - the malbec grapes come through first - they are medium sweet, semi-tart, and fairly rich in flavor, adding some depth to the approach - deep bitterness and roast arrive after that, washing out all the grape character - some oak and vanilla arrive late, as does some alcohol heat - as an oak-aged stout, it probably would have been just fine - the addition of the grape juice just adds a character that, while momentarily pleasant, pretty much just clashes with everything else - some redeeming qualities, but ultimately a failed experiment as far as I am concerned.
