Aroma of roasted malt, milk chocolate, coffee, hint of liquorice. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet with a moderate roasty bitter finish. Not a huge Imperial Stout, but definitely well-rounded and smooth enjoyable drinker.

Dutch craft beer by Pampus, with irregular, lightly lacing, moussy and stable, pale greyish beige head and very dark, almost opaque chestnut brown colour, as good as black. Aroma of strong coffee grounds and cold black coffee, strong beef stock, fairly strong haemoglobin iron, notable charcoal, bitter chocolate, bayleaf, cigar ashes, roasted peanuts, burnt wood, toasted brown bread, caramel, old raisins, dried autumn leaves, black olive, fresh seaweed. Taste starts with some dried fruits, raisins and dates, but only subdued in terms of sweetness, with very subtle sourish and (much) more outspoken beefy umami hints surrounding it; carbo is soft but just fit for the style. Middle phase adds a thick but supple layer of nutty, toasted and eventually rather ’charred’ and roasted maltiness, never to become explicitly sweet and turning to the bitter side almost right away, with the initial dried fruit sweetishness lingering; mouthfeel is oily and full. Finish returns the lovely roasted bitter effect along with deep, herbal and leafy, slightly peppery hop bitterishness, but the alcohol, though noticeable, remains very well hidden for a stout of this strength. Chocolate seems to have been added but as usual in this type of beers, remains a superficial ’metallic’ feel rather than being deeply intermingled with the overall malt taste. Apart from bittersweet malts (more bitter than sweet) and spicy hop bitterness, it is primarily the meaty umami flavour which lasts and lasts after swallowing. Dry, well-balanced and appetizing stout, more an export stout than a true foreign stout if you ask me, but well-mannered and tasty for sure.

At a tasting, thanks, small bubbly beige head, dark brown color, aroma of dark bread, coal, charred notes and cocoa, flavor of dark bread, dark chocolate and earthy notes with some alcohol coming through, suprisingly light bodied. Nice and quite easy.

Thank you! 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Dean’s sticky Bomb Shelter” Tasting. Black, little mocha bubbles. Nose is light soy, bit thin with some powdery mocha, dash sweet syrup & cheap coffee. Taste is a bit thin, mocha, cacao powder, sugar, thin soy, light licorice, some berries. Body is a bit thin & touch fizzy. Overall lacks some body, could have been more but drinks rather well. A solid basic offering.
