Aroma is initially very toasty buy as it warms the chipotle becomes rather noticeable. Light coffee note that was stronger when the beer was cold. Medium low chocolate aromas. Pours dark brown, almost black with a moderately thick tan head that has decent retention but does end up disappearing to the sides. No lacing or legs. Flavor has an initial sweet chocolate note that turns more toasty. Mid palate you get a nice coffee note, not too strong but instead more of a background note. The finish has a bit of chocolate and a light chipotle flavor. Some lingering spice in the finish - not too strong but definitely noticeable. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth, though there is some warmth from the peppers. Overall a fairly well balanced stout that is on the smaller side compared to what most people release these days. The chipotle is well balanced and adds background flavor and aroma without kicking your palate’s ass. The coffee is a bit on the faint side for my preferences.

Pours almost black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and hint of smoke. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long coffee, chocolate finish with a hint of chili and burn. Body is medium, texture oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the taproom. A next to black one. A small beige head on top. Roasted aroma with some coffee and chocolate. Soft on the palate, semi-dry, with a pleasant carbonation. Roasted flavor with coffee, chocolate and some chipotle that burns lightly. Pleasant finish. The chipotle actually lifts this beer to a high level. 130812

Deep dark brown coloured body with a ruby and strong violet tint and a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of coffee, milk, cream, earth, caramel, peat and a little oak - very nice and complex - even in the nose. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong earthy malts up front with some coffee and chocolate noticeable, a lot of milk and creamy notes tucked in with quite a bit of sugars, all caramelised. Aftertaste shows a good complexity with some alcohol, oak, vanilla, toffee and some slight burn from chiles. Overall, a nice and strong beer that shows well and lingers for a while! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from BevMo (Mission Valley) in San Diego, California on 08-June-2013 for US$5.49 sampled at home in Washington on 14-July-2013.

Bottle at CGarvie tasting. Bit of a gusher! It pours very dark brown with a quickly dissipating head. The nose is roasted malt, mellow caramel, vanilla, toasted coconut, chocolate, mild coffee, wood and bourbon. The taste is roasted malt, spice, earth, caramel, touch chilli pepper, cracked black pepper, light bitterness, bourbon, vanilla and warming alcohol. Medium-full body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Mellow and fairly well-balanced.

Bottle @ home via trade with OCBeerSociety. Thanks! Pours a black appearance with a thin brown head. Moderately spicy chili pepper, light veggie, toasty malty, coffee, chocolate aroma with a fair amount of spiciness that tickles the nose. A bit chewy malty, cocoa, roasty malty, slightly spicy, pepper, bitter coffee flavor with some spiciness on the finish. Kind of fun but I’m not positive that I enjoy the coffee element.

Draft @ the brewery. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate aroma with weak smoky chili hints. Roasted malty chocolate and coffee flavor with hints of chili. Has a roasted malty chocolate and chili finish.

Bottle. Deep dark brown liquid with medium light tan head. Aroma of pumpernickel, some smoked chili, light coffee, ash and bread. Taste is dry and light bitter with some roasted chili and just a light burn. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Decent stout with nice, smokey chili notes.
