A higher gravity seasonal version of the year-round Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale. It’s made with Westmalle Trappist yeast that creates those curious phenolic off-flavors that are freakin’ everyone out these days. Massively dosed with boatloads of wheat and pale malt and finishes with a big, hoppy ending.

Many times the name of a beer is very misleading, like this one. I bought it thinking I was going to get some kind of wild, slightly tart ale. Forget about that. Its simply an IPA in diguise; bitter hoppy IPA all the way including the finish. How rude. Should be listed as an IPA style, go figure. And now I see why all the other ratebeerians rate it so high.

22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA, opened 9/28/10. Pours a hazy golden-peach color with a thin creamy white head. Good head retention and fair lacing. Aroma of spicy, peppery hops, fruity notes including peach, fig, citrus and white grapes. The taste is spicy, peppery and citrus hop notes with a fruity finish, including lime, figs and peaches. Medium bodied. Nice beer.

It really is not a wild ale. Yeast in the flavor and aroma. Gold color. A little sweet with grain and sugar. On the light side for the style, not much here.

Brickskellar, DC ($7): Pours a golden color with a white head. Not that impressive in appearance, but it makes up for it with the powerfully fruity and yeasty aroma. I think that the yeast is actually more noticeable than many of the other reviewers make it out to be. Additionally, the core of this beer from the normal Little Sumpin is definitely present in all of its glory. Basically, this is a Belgian, wheat, IPA... so it is as if all three of the styles are stacked onto one another. The wheat would be the easiest to miss and it makes the least difference in the taste of the beer; however, the IPA and the Belgian ale are continually vying for dominance. This competition is not one with a clear winner, but rather maintains a balance and oscillation between equally powerful and appealing flavors. Extremely fruit (in a Belgian rather than West Coast way), but equally hoppy. I just like Lagunitas!

Bomber - label says it is brewed with Westmalle yeast - word - gold pour with a very light hazy - nose is very ipa-ish, with a lot of woody (pine) and grapefruit-like hop notes - however, some tropical fruit sweetness, fruity belgian yeast esters, mild phenols and a hint of mint make things more interesting - the flavor is much sweeter than I expected - some earthy hop bitterness bookends this, but it is not enough to balance it (the juicyfruit gum comparison another rater mentioned is apt) - the best part of the experience are the notes of pineapple, mango and papaya that compliment the sweetness and make it more bearable - finish brings the most bitterness and even a hint of earthy, basement-y character, but it is so faint it just may be a figment of my imagination - needs some serious drying out - good, but still carries that somewhat dumbed down, "I could have been a much more awesome beer" character that many Lagunitas products do.

Bottle marked at 8.85%. Pours with a slightly hazed golden body and a small, off-white head. Huge, foamy, sticky lacing! Aromas of strong citrus/floral/spicy hops, belgian yeast, and caramel. HUGE pine. Tons of hops! Smells very citrus and very well attenuated. Tons of resin! Flavors are bitter, candied orange peel, light phenolics, and burnt flan. More resin. Very lively carbonation. Dry. Some canned pineapple and grapefruit. Pretty tasty Belgian IPA. Excellent infact.

pression @ OTH.

Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with off white head. Grapefruit rind aroma. Sweet and slightly tart grapefruit flavor with some doughy tastes. Medium body with average carbonation. Another solid offering from Lagunitas.

On tap at flying saucer. Pours a clear orange gold with a small frothy white head that leaves sticky white lacing. The aroma is a sweet fruit and cascade hops. Medium mouthfeel with a dry hop and yeast. Easy to drink a very good belgian ale from Lagunitas.
