A higher gravity seasonal version of the year-round Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale. It’s made with Westmalle Trappist yeast that creates those curious phenolic off-flavors that are freakin’ everyone out these days. Massively dosed with boatloads of wheat and pale malt and finishes with a big, hoppy ending.

22 oz. bottle. Just wrapped up making a big pot of chili, which for me takes as long as a brew day. And here’s this, which I found at the new Lemon Tree across the tracks from me Thursday! Pours a clean bright pilsener color with a touch of rose, and a small but stately procession of bubbles, to an angel-food cake type head. Smell brings up a lot of complexity, some Amarillo hop, I thought, and spicy Belgian yeast at work (the label says Westmalle: boy, haven’t one in a while). Some pepper, coriander, a bit of horse blanket, all very enticing. Taste is, well, sublime. Hard to describe, hard to compare it to any beer I remember: it’s its own unique entity. Again, big American hops to the fore, but plenty of spiciness that may be the yeast, may be some English and German hops to boot, Just no added spices, it’s all in the chemistry. Sticky malts bear glad tidings of warm alcohol (my label says 8.85% to0, not 7.8%). Maybe it’s just my mood, relaxing after a busy day of chili cooking and writing, or my cold clearing up so I can appreciate beer again, but this one hits the spot absolutely. My ratings on Lagunitas beers run a wide range, but I like the chances they take when it results in something fab like this!

On tap at Bottleworks, pours pale golden with a white head. Aroma of grains, wheat, and hops. Flavour of hops, caramel malts and sour fruits. Well-done Belgian ale.

Tap. Poured a light copper color, small white head with pour. Aroma was sweet malts (similar to other Lagunitas beers), grapefruit notes, yeasty. Flavor was sweet malts, citrus, yeast, bready. Tad sweet, but very drinkable, clean finish.

Bomber from Taylor’s Market in Sacramento, CA. Pours rather clear and orange with a foamy white head. Lush floral/fruit aromas. Near full bodied with foamy carbonation. Malt? Well hidden. Hop - lots of floral, could be background citrus and pine. Finishes with a little light malt sweet and bitter stuck all over the mouth. YUM!

Poured up on tap at the Brass Tap pouring clear copper with gold edges and off white head. The aroma puts out loads of rich citrus, spicy hops and some smooth smelling sugary malt sweetness. The taste is rich sugar infused grapefruit, sugary tangelo juice, orange peel and some spicy hops to round out the initial impression. Full rich hoppy brew with loads of hop flavor and moderate hop bitterness creating a pleasing balance. I think the yeast used here may have allowed this to seem a touch thinner and drier.

Bottle thanks to Sarah! Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma is full of pine hops with a bit of backing funk and sweet bread. Flavor is similar with plenty of pine hops the mellow in to a sweet grain backing. The wild yeast doesn’t really come out too much.

Delicious. Draught. Hazy dark orange with thick white head. Floral and peach aroma, very pleasant. Full body, with spicy edge to the caramel. Spicy finish, all over the tongue. Worth drinking again.

Bottle at Bodega Brew Pub in La Crosse. This brew pours a clear orange color with a medium white soap-bubbly head that recedes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet toasted malt and hops. Medium body with floral hops, earthy malt and yeast flavors. The finish is fruity with a lingering yeast and malt aftertaste. Solid brew throughout.

Pours deep gold into a snifter. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet caramel, wheat, marshmallow and resin aromas. Medium bodied with sweet marshmallow and brett from front to back. Lasting brett finish with a very mild grapefruit background.

On tap at Brewforia in Meridian, ID Nearly clear light orange/yellow with a thick creamy white head that left lacing on the sides of the glass all the way to the bottom. Bug fresh sweet hop aroma with light malts and a sharp Belgian yeast character as well. Sweet hop flavors, sticky fruity, banana pineapple and pear maybe. remarkably little bitterness for all the hop flavor you get. Very wet palette with a lot of residual sweetness. A Belgian IPA
