Songbird Lavender Dark 5.5% An extreme beer for sure! This smells like potpourri or soap, crazy lavender smell on a dark brown with a tan head beer. The taste is insane levels of lavender, like balls of soap or something. It overpowers the malty caramel base. Well made but an insane recipe that needs to tone down the lavender. My small glass was barely drinkable and we quickly moved on to something else. Get it to tick with like 10 people for a manageable portion.

Bottle. Massive potpourri of lavender with mint and other herbs de Provence. Some chocolate, light spicy yeast. Essential oils of lavender coat and sting the tongue as you feel like a child who just got his mouth washed out with soap. It is soapy and oily and completely undrinkable with HUGE lavender burning through your mind. This is an interesting idea and I love lavender, but as Willis wrote years ago, it is way, way, way overblown. 5% of the present amount of lavender would probably be enough. Then I would try it again.

Bottle from Hasegawa. Pours a murky brown with purple highlights. Lavender bomb on the nose with some light cinnamon and mint. Body is super thin on the palate with watery mouthfeel. Way too much lavender in this thing. Lavender is one of those flower/herbs that you only need a dash of and it’s been way overdone to the point of some grassy lavender stem bitterness on the finish. Slightly chalky, drywall character with old cardboard on the finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Dark Lavender on 26 Oct 2015 at 22:08 - Score: 3
