The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Pours a deep/dark garnet, with the slightest bit of haziness. About one finger of head, decent retention and some lacing. Aroma: strong sourness already evident, half acetic, half citric. Citric notes are mainly (if not only) lemon. Cherries. Far from the richness/complexity i expected. Taste is pretty sour, even for the style, as the smell suggested, with citric sourness taking a slight edge over acetic sourness. There's a moderate sweet note in the midst, which brings a hint of almond, but finish and aftertaste are still mainly sour. Notes of lemon, cherries, almond, minimal funkiness. Medium to light bodied with a carbonation that's definitely higher than style average, resulting in a lively/sparkling mouthfeel that's not unpleasant, but doesn't feel like fitting this kind of beer to me. A vividly sour example of the style, but a surprisingly 'simple' beer; i expected more depth.

Bottle from Craft Beer Oasis, Crewe (drank at home). Pours a rich ruby with a generous, but transient frothy milk chocolate head. There is a general sour aroma ervading here, though with some hitns of wooden barrels and cough mixture. Very shar and sour in the mouth, with suggestions of cocnetrated fruit juice (lime mainly). Also, some maltiness and spices from the base beer comes through. A very mice well balanced sour.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ de Prins, Rhenoy.
Clear reddish brown with a thin off-white head. Vinous sour cherry aroma. Sour taste with a dry fruity sour finish. More sour than an average Flanders red but very very interesting and complex. Great beer in one of my favorite beer styles.

Bottle from the Packie. Pours a brilliantly clear dark amber with ruby at the edges and a tightly bubbled off white head that slowly recedes. Tart cherry and light lemon tartness with hints of balsamic. Sweet bread and light brown sugary maltiness. Decent puckering in the back of the palette. Nice Sour Red.

Bottle. A- Cherry, mild cola, slightly dirty. A- Deep dark red color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Cherry, mild vanilla, mild cocoa, mild cola, subtle tartness, subtle funk. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- 5 years old. Not too bad although I think it'd be better fresh. Nice strong dried cherry flavor and aroma. Cola notes strong when it's cold and gradually brings out some funk as it warms.
