Hideji Dark Chestnut Ale 9% I got this at CBB SEED as many praised it and I’ve gotta say the inky look and rusty tan head looked pretty good. The head fizzed away a bit too fast though and the aroma gave soy/umami savory elements with a floral/fruity nutty chestnut too. Full bodied with a dry finish and a surprisingly fruity floral almost perfume like nutty chestnut flavor. It’s pretty intense and actually I found it off-putting at first but it’s growing on me. Well worth trying but be prepared for sticker shock as it is 1000¥/Bottle and often pricey on tap as well...

Bottle from the brewery. Nutty nose, lots of chocolate and fudge, chestnut, coconut, vanilla. Lightish body, rich and alcohol is well hidden. Lovely, mild, great chocolate flavor with mild chestnuts throughout. Nice stuff. Glad to finally get to try it.

Black color, medium frothy head. Some aroma of vanilla and glue. Soft mouthfeel, moderate sweetness, flavor of vanilla, roasted coconut; thin final; it doesn’t feel the alcohol; not much bitterness.
Nice, a bit fake.

Bottle picked up at uptown market. Pours out dark brown almost black topped with a fizzy head. Nose is very sweet big vanilla milk chocolate roast malts and a nice nutty notes. Taste is more of the rich roast malts milk chocolate sweetness vanilla and plenty of nutty notes.

On tap at PIB 2016, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a reddish tinge and a small tan head. Aroma brings out cocoa, dark fruits, and chestnuts - very soft-smelling. Flavour is along the same lines, with loads of fairly dry cocoa and light toasted chestnut presence. Light-bodied for the style, but quite complex. Really nice.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma is sort of roasty dark malt, chocolate, and maybe some nut. Med + body. Flavor is chocolate, and something that must be chestnut, but it’s not the typical greasy nut in American browns. Lightly spicy too. It’s off the main IS path, but it drinks tastily and nicely. Maybe finishes with a bit of Turbinado sugar. Not a dry finish, but refined and pleasing.

How did this beer from Kyushu with one rating end up in Portland? Well, beervana strikes again! 12 ounce bottle from Uptown Market. Pours a almost jet black color with a medium brown head. A nice chocolate and dark fruit nose. Very sweet, I mean this is huge sugary chestnuts, smoke, ash, lactose, brown sugar. Hmm. Minerals. Very dry in the finish with rich cocoa and chestnut. Interesting. A bit much for me in terms of the dusty dry finish and the overall sugary sweet middle. But it looks awesome and is promising. Hopefully I?ll see more of this brewery.
