TDM 1874 Old Ale 8% I got this in Shimokitazawa and believe I had it on tap then as well. Lovely reddish brown color with thick creamy beige foam. Velvety smooth mouthfeel and full body. The aroma is plums (figs?), tobacco and biscuits. The taste starts off with loads of stone fruits then gets bitter tobacco leaf notes to balance things out. Tasty and dead easy to drink. I chose this as I thought today would be cloudy but it’s going down like a treat on a beautiful sunny day.

Bottle courtesy of George, shared with the Craft Brewed crew. Pours a clear copper, mahogany with a finger of beige head that lingers. Roasted toffee, charred kokuto and tomitsu aromas with some grassy and woody notes as it warms. Bitter on the palate, with walnut, sticks, bark and more charred tomitsu. Quite bitter finish that lingers with leafy hops, walnut shell and toasted toffee.

deep chestnut color. Flat had. Slightly sweet malty nose with chocolate and dark fruit. Caramel pudding, plums, bread and chocolate malty mouth. Wow. Fantastic. Slightly warming finish. A true winter warmer. Super well put together. Low carbonation. Wow. One of the best old ales I’ve had in awhile. Nailed the style perfectly. Wow. So fantastic. Lingering plum and chocolate finish. Fuck. Wow. The review above was for the 2018 ver. 2019 walks s all over 2018 (3.9). The plum character is so deep and dank it’s like I am having a liquid version of the fruit with the pit in my mouth without much acidity. I’ve never had plum at this level. This is fuckin insane. To me this is the new benchmark for the style. Of course the chocolate is there too but god damn this is heaven.

Tap at iBREW Shinbashi. Dark brown pour, no real carbonation and no real head. Bready caramel nose, no sweetness though. Some rye spices? Taste has more caramel, recognisable booze kick and also lots of lighltly bitter rye spices. Dark fruits, plums and figs without accompanying aweetness. Dry. Pretty much exactly as I imagine how a well made old ale should be.

Tap at Takumiya. Spicy nose, tobacco, caramel, raisins. Spicy hops and dried fruits in the flavor, blackstrap molasses comes through as does the rich British malt with brown sugar. Malt and rich but not overly sweet with a dry, spicy, nicely hopped finish. Great.
