Herbst Alt Celler

Bottle from the series. Nice again. Caramel and fruit, light smokiness but not as noticeable. don't spot so much difference between the regular and the celler version this time. Nice richness. Good stuff.

Pours copper, not much foam. Lots of caramel, sweetish. Caramel sweetness in the taste, some herbs, and bitter caramel finish. Not as sweet as I was afraid of, probably quite good execution for the style. Unfortunately that’s a style I am not a big fan of.

Deep brown color. Very earthy, caramel, wood, and cherries. Medium body, earthy strawberries. Good depth, but very malty. Interesting

A slightly lighter brown than the regular Herbst Alt with a thicker more resilient head of foam. A softer, nuttier caramel aroma greats you while the body is fuller (Med-full) and sweeter. The carbonation is a touch less aggressive and the flavor is nutty, roasty, caramel, chocolate with a herbal hop bite. The hops are definitely more pronounced in this version.

On it’s own I think I prefer the Herbst Alt but when you have them side by side it brings out an earthy bitter caramel in the Alt Celler and the semi-dry finish is quite quaffable making the Celler version go down a touch smoother and it seems a bit closer to my expectations when I think of Alt. Both are very solid brews.

Bottle, mail order from the brewery. Slightly fuller, maltier nose than the filtered version. More chocolate coming through. Cloudy deep brown orange, nice head. Flavor is also fuller and richer. Smooth, full body. Wow this is nice. Great chocolate notes, with minerals and earth. rich, bready malt like in Germany. It’s not very sweet, though. Really nice.
