Fortunella is the contested scientific taxonomy of the delicious Kumquat fruit, and the beer before you is a tribute to it’s tart, juicy and beguiling flavors. Our brewers have crafted a Belgian-style Witbier with both oats and wheat. While many beers in this style are made with Orange peel, we’ve substituted in whole Kumquats instead and fermented the beer entirely on the fruit. The resultant beer is lightly tart, shows a huge aroma of fresh citrus, and has a dry and spicy finish.

This is the second release in our new Farmhouse, Fruit and Funk Series. This set of six beers–each available for two months of the year–showcases the deft and playful ways in which our brewers use non-traditional ingredients to make complex, flavorful beers. From Lychee and Yellow Chilies to Oregon-grown Peaches and California Kumquats, this line of beers stakes a claim for the “culinary beer” as an emergent, delicious and elegant new beer style.

Bottle. Bright golden color with perfect clarity, until the third pour when it gets pretty murky. Thin white cap. Nose is fruity and bright, just the lightest hint of wheat. Flavor is sweet and lightly sour. A fruity blend, very faint witbier wheat and yeast, and a little tart.

Bottle from Mitsuya’s. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a one-finger head of foam. Big coriander nose up front with kumquat, lime and iyokan citrus standing out as well. Light body with a slightly watery mouthfeel but very refreshing. Light tartness on the palate. Finishes with more citrus, pepper and spice with some chamomile in the background that lingers. Not a bad wit at all. --- Beer merged from original tick of Fortunella on 21 Dec 2015 at 22:11 - Score: 7. Original review text: Super light and refreshing with some tartness and a dry finish. Good carbonation. Light body.

Bomber at Imazato. Golden-orange with lots of floaties. Herbal, citrus nose. Sweet flavor of camomile, citrus, sage, biscuits. Nice tartness. Round, mellow spiciness is a bit too much, but pretty interesting.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours light hazy gold with a slight white head. Aroma is fruit and citrus, with a tart note. Near med body. Flavor is rather cinnamon spicy, with fruit and citrus. Not a typical wit. It is mildly fruity/funky/tart. Quite refreshing on a very hot day.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy gold with small creamy white head that lasts. The aroma is strong chamomile and kumquat. Medium mouth, dry, banana, chamomile, kumquat, light tartness, very good.

Bomber. Pours a clear orange color with a small white head. A big zesty fruity nose, lime and tropical notes. The flavor is huge base tropical fruit, light fresh hay, lime, coriander, the base of a wit bier is very clear. The overall package is so well done that this is really quite drinkable. Tasty. Zesty spices with big fruity tropical notes and a dry yeasty wit base.

Bomber. Aroma is fruity, floral, herbal tea, coriander, soap--quite the concoction. Pours hazy pale yellow with a collapsing white head. Taste is sweet, savory and lightly tart, finishing dry. All ingredients come through in flavor as well; also, red licorice. Nice creamy mouthfeel, perfect carbonation, medium body. Tasty.
